Everyday things make up the fabric of life, whether it’s making friends, going to school, trying to make money, or celebrating a holiday. Ichigo Mashimaro is a heartwarming series that follows the daily lives of Itou Chika, her sister Nobue, and her friends Miu, Matsuri, and Ana.

I hadn’t actually thought about how kraysk sounds similar to sakrask until now but hey I guess I’m making them canon cognates now! Out-of-universe I got the kray part of kraysk from a corruption of Standard Chinese 可爱kě’ài meaning “cute” — a word which I only know because the Wiktionary page for 可か愛わいい kawaii remarks on how the similarity between the Chinese and Japanese words for “cute” is entirely coincidental.

I may have also been subtly subconsciously influenced by the Slavic word край / kraj meaning “edge”, related to words meaning things like “cut” and deriving from a PIE root meaning “to divide”: cute, after all, traces to a Latin word meaning “sharp”.

The original form of M***ŕe in every case is M***ri, so evidently you don’t quite understand how the sound changes work (which is partly on me for not explaining them super well). The change is basically *M×××ri-e → *M×××rye → *M×××ŕe. This is related to how *Windí-e became Wind́é back in part 1.

One thing I’d like to point out is that this “M***ri” name is actually two different names: the same name in two of the anime, but a different name, that just happens to share an initial and final mora, in the third. But both names are regular Japanese feminine names in any case.

When a character’s name is non-Japanese, I generally try to render it according to the original pronunciation in the respective language, or if nothing else how the name is commonly said en anglais — so, for instance, Edwǒd-Elrika rather than *Edowádo-Eruriḱǒ.

The Demon Girl Next Door

When Yuuko Yoshida wakes up one morning to discover that she’s sprouted horns and a tail, she learns something that her mother has been meaning to tell her. You know that battle between the Light and Dark that’s been going on since the dawn of time? Well, Yuuko’s family are the bad guys.

So now, Yuuko has to defeat a local magical girl to win back some of her family’s vanquished power so they can afford to go to the all-you-can-eat pancake restaurant. And, of course, it turns out that the Magical Girl goes to Yuuko’s school, but Momo’s really nice and keeps rescuing Yuuko, which is pretty embarrassing and leaves Yuuko rather conflicted… but… all you can eat pancakes?

Coming up with a word for pancake was hard. Simply calquing pancake or flapjack or any other English-language name for the dish didn’t bring me anything satisfactory, and felt kinda lazy in any case. Then I looked through what pancakes are called in different languages, and I looked at different types of pancakes or pancake-like foods from different cultures, but still none of it really gave me any inspiration. And then it hit me: Kansas, they say, is “flatter than a pancake”. /ˈkænzəs/ → /ˈkænzəz/ → /ˈkænz/ → /ˈkændz/ → /kandz/ — “yup, kanx sounds like it could reasonably be the name of a pancake-like dish in a foreign culture, which could be semantically broadened to refer to all forms of pancake. Let’s go with that!”

I. Ć**é is a character named Chika whose family name begins with I. There are literally only two anime characters that match this description, so you could look this up in a character name database and figure the show out basically immediately. But you favor more challenge than that, surely!

M***ŕe is either Mihari or Matsuri.

M*ǒ and A*é are one letter off from Mio and Aya.

N***ye is NOT Natsuki.

Kazuma Satou decides that today is the day to get out of the house for a bit. Since he dies, pointlessly, it’s clearly a bad choice. The goddess who greets him in the afterlife, however, offers him a chance to be reborn in a world not unlike that of a video game, and as a bonus she’ll even throw in a cool item or power! Can’t possibly be a bad choice, right? Except he arrives with no money at all, dead average skills, and his “bonus” isn’t useful at all–since he picked the goddess, Aqua, herself.
