The year 2025 may come to be seen as a “tipping point” when democratic institutions were severely damaged and human rights suffered as a result, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).
The global human rights system is in peril," wrote HRW executive director Philippe Bolopion. “Under relentless pressure from US President Donald Trump, and persistently undermined by China and Russia, the rules-based international order is being crushed.”
Here the whole world report available in several languages.
I don’t like doomerism, but during the last year more and more parallels between Russia’s escalating totalitarianism and the USA’s escalating totalitarianism became apparent, easily recognizable, almost identical headlines sometimes.
If they properly co-operated things could look pretty bleak for the rest of the world.
But it seems both leaders are megalomaniac enough that it will never happen, at least not as equal partners.Let’s just hope that the hubris that got us into this will also be the end of this.
(I’m not deliberately excluding China btw)
Imo we need t watch out not to be dragged into their lunacy. Simultaneously, (foreign) actors continuously try to erode (European) democracy within and without. We need to protect our democratic institutions & human rights in a way that doesn’t entail loosing those same core values we want to protect. Thats a tight line to walk,so we all must remain vigilant, and not take anything for granted.
Hi there, hope you all fine!
In my view, global human‑rights violations have been entrenched for far too long; recent events are merely another tip of the iceberg. While “some nations” (we know whom they are) have each exaggerated their roles, the most striking observation from my fifty‑something years of experience is how little we seem to learn as we move forward.
We have constructed a world where money reigns supreme—first, second, and third. Laws are applied differently depending on one’s title, influence, and wealth (or lack thereof).
“Fortunately,” I will not linger on this decadent “brave new world” for much longer.
If humanity continues on its current trajectory, it won’t be surprising to see the majority of the planet resemble the dystopian societies depicted in cautionary films—while we’re distracted by another soda and a bucket of popcorn.
Wishing the best for us all.
I’ll be using my wealth to bring down capitalism. I don’t care if that means I lose out on money, I care about winning society back from the fascists.
If we don’t win society back from capitalism we’d lose out on money anyways. What savings we have only has value in a functioning society that’s willing and able to exchange work for it.
Marx was right.
