I hope this comment doesn’t age well, but I’m betting Windows 12 will remove the start menu entirely and replace it with a copilot prompt box that opens applications by text or voice activation. There are no alternatives and not updating is not an option.
I genuinely felt the veins lining the periphery of my brain throb at the thought.
Imagine if you just wanted to open up the browser, and windows 12 hallucinates that you wanted to open up candy crush that came preinstalled.
Or at the very least, you ask for Firefox and they open Edge “accidentally.”
Then gives you a nice big list of things you can do with your browser that you didn’t ask for.
That’s their actual goal. Subscription-based, with an insane, seizure-inducing, amount of ads.
And it’s coming sooner than you think.
All I hope personally is that MacOS doesn’t follow. But given the recent enshitification of all the Mac OSes from the last updates…

The irony is I’m pretty sure Windows started getting dumber as it copied MacOS when it gained popularity, removing file extensions, making file systems harder to navigate, spending lots of resources on GUI effects, etc. I mean 11 even centered the start menu, c’mon!

OpenAI already suggested this one. Microsoft played with the idea and wanted “further integration into the os” but they’re pulling back from that now that everybody is calling them MicroSlop.

And then comes in a new manager who still needs to learn that lesson and is dead set on disrupting something.
Some kind of AI first operating system will come over the next couple of years.
