I highly suspect that a big reason why China got into renewables at scale was precisely because they knew something like this would happen sooner or later. The exact nature of the event is hard to predict, but the fact that an event of this kind would happen sooner or later was pretty much a certainty. Now, China is incredibly well positioned because there’s going to be massive global interest in stuff like solar, EVs, and batteries, which happen to be the industries China dominates.

And we might actually see the world starting to address fossil fuel usage in a meaningful way, so there’s now a chance we avoid the worst outcomes of the climate crisis.
