I mean you guys and gals can heavily watch it. But I asked a question a while back how come dish does not have a playlist feature. If someone called up dish or invented a way is that piracy? Or the latest hacking news between the black white and gray hats? There will be not a person be able to say hay download here or there. Or if you would allow us to just not do exploits but link an article that says how you can get more space on the cloud and google hasn;t spotted it or some such. I can explain further.

There was brouhaha when they first blocked it (I think they originally defederated from db0) and the reason given was .world had received a takedown notice from a rights holder because of a thread where someone was actually sharing some sort of copyright material. They felt like they were attracting attention as one of the largest instances, even though they weren’t the source.

None of that is true. They were never defederated, nor did they receive a takedown (that I know of). They simply blocked the community out of an abundance of caution because they felt an image with a URL to the TLD of a pirate site is too risky.

Being somewhat new to Lemmy, what are some good instances to use besides? I’m still learning about them, but I’ve heard not so good things about .ml?

I like sopuli.xyz, mander.xyz is pretty cool, in general I recommend browsing your federated/all feed and checking out the new instance names you see and notice the instance names of the communities and users you seem to vibe with or that talk about things you are interested in.

Make accounts in a couple different places, to a reasonable degree you aren’t wasting anyones time if you want to try out a new instance but don’t end up liking it!

If you want you can use the same name as your account name on lemmy world so that it is easy to remember and for other people to know you are the same user. If that is what you want of course, that is just a suggestion if it feels overwhelming.

If this instance isn’t friendly to the community you want, why don’t you just start that community on another instance? This is exactly what federation is for.

Well I like this instance and pretty much become friends with alot of people. But just think we could do a bit better than reddits r/piracy and if the ADMINS don’t think it going well enough or I am enabling illegal stuff or come even close to that they will at least give me a week. After a week if they don;t like it ill shut it down. And I will also make sure all illegal stuff get bonked. Last thing I do is want my favorite instance in trouble.

Again, federation. You aren’t leaving this instance just because you interact with another instance. You aren’t leaving your friends behind. With federation, they already have access to your new community.

The idea of begging an instance admin to change their position is the antithesis of federation. Join or start a community on an instance where that community is welcomed, appreciated, and supported. If that isn’t here, find another one. If you can’t find one, go start your very own instance just to host your comm.

Lemmy != Reddit. Don’t bring that Reddit mindset here.

You can export your followed communities in settings, then import them on another instance after you make an account.

As long as the instance you choose federates with lemmy.world you’ll see exactly the same communities you do now.

Db0 tends to host piracy related communities,.

There’s nothing preventing you from remaining friends with the same people while you’re on a different instance. Federation takes care of that.

Actually, they lost their server, not their domain. They couldn’t maintain the lemmy software ( I think the original admin lost interest or smt) and just gave up. They did open a failover comm for !freemediaheckyeah@lemmy.dbzer0.com but most of their active users didn’t have an interest in participating in lemmy over discord and reddit.

My memory is blurry but they first lost .ml domain and an instance along it. Then after like idk, 1-2 months they created a new instance being under I think lemmy.fmhy.net domain but it got soon taken down because there was only 1 person maintaining everything. In discussions with them (singular) back then I also learned that they were having a loooot issues with weird recurring errors that other instances weren’t having and they were overall tired. The “owner” of the group was also at the time very sad and pessimistic about the events relating to the project apologising to everyone and it was hard for me to convince them that it’s not their fault and such and that I don’t blame them. I assume they were struggling with something but don’t remember the specifics. Back to the sole maintainer of the instance, they also quit (or were kicked?) from the discord server over some drama a few months after the closure of the second attempt at instance. I don’t know the specifics of drama because it was some time after I quit and only heard stuff second hand. FMHY situation was a death by 1000 cuts. If something could go wrong it went wrong and it all happened in early lemmy days where things were still quite buggy.

E: And I really not sure about that but I always remembered them having the server and only the domain being a problem. I may have made that up with time or misunderstood something when that happened. I can’t be bothered to look through old messages.

Seems so. It was abandoned for a really long time so either they remembered to remove it or it got automatically purged assuming the instance has something like that.
