*he was killed in prison by NK. His body was released to his parents in a vegetative state and life support was suspended to reduce his suffering.

He read a prepared confession that said he planned to steal the poster for a Methodist church and a secret society, both of whom are allied with the CIA. By the way, he was Jewish. So the story is that a Jewish kid is working for a Methodist church to help the CIA steal a poster from a North Korean hotel. Yeah.

He got released early, though. He’d only been imprisoned for 17 months when they sent him back in a vegetative state. His parents decided it would be better to euthanise him by disconnecting his feeding tube.

An attendant told his tour group that he wouldn’t be able to fly back with them because he was sick and had to be taken to the hospital. Then he appears on TV for the trial, sobbing and reading the statement. Then the world hears nothing for a year. Donald Trump wins the 2016 election, and the Trump administration says Trump secured Otto’s release. Otto is flown back to America in a coma. He can breathe and blink, can’t do anything else on his own. No response to stimuli.

The North Korean doctors say he caught a case of botulism from some bad food and took a sleeping pill, and he’s been like that since a month after the conviction. Over a year. They share two MRI scans, they say one is recent and one’s a year old. The American doctors look at him. They say he’s got serious brain damage caused by lack of oxygen to the brain, consistent with a cardiopulmonary event. No signs of physical trauma, no healed skull fractures. But also no signs of botulism. Some doctors say it’s suspicious, others say there wouldn’t be signs after this long. He’s in remarkably good shape for someone who’s been in a coma for a year. Good muscle mass for the circumstances, excellent skin condition. The parents are told all of this and consulted. The parents say pull the plug.

The parents sue North Korea for wrongful death. North Korea does not send a representative to the trial, so the parents win by default. Judge awards them 500 million and sends the bill to North Korea. North Korea send it back, unpaid. The parents get their money from the sale of a North Korean cargo ship that America seized for smuggling, and from a North Korean bank. They use the money to give a North Korean defector a scholarship.

Young Pioneers, the tourism company that sold Otto the holiday, no longer takes American tourists to North Korea, but is happy to take people from other countries. You can go buy a tour on their website and get drunk in Pyongyang.

Does not sound like the most charming destination for my next vacation.

Let’s wait for another two years and see how everything else around this shithole develops.

The more ridiculous the statement is the more easily it can be defended.

If they had just said, rip a poster off the wall you get the Guillotine, that would be harder to defend than saying that, he worked for the “super CIA” and had an evil plan to destroy the county, beginning with that poster …

What strikes me as most stupid about this is that the DPRK themselves said that the reason is the poster

To be honest, every time I hear about someone coming to the US in the last year and getting fucked over, my first thought tends to be, “how can you be so stupid as to visit the US now of all times?”

I’m not thinking they deserve it, but I do tend to think anyone who visits here is asking for it.

John Allen Chau was a fucking idiot for visiting North Sentinel Island.

The same general criticism applies to this case of the idiot visiting North Korea.

In both cases, the idiot in question received a punishment that is grossly disproportionate to the “crimes” they committed.

In both cases, and this cannot be stressed enough: Both men wilfully and proactively worked through a difficult process to bypass multiple STAY THE FUCK AWAY barriers, in order to risk their lives to limit test.

THC is relatively benign. There is no possible way to get me to debate this point with a vape pen in pocket, in Singapore.

Otto joined a budget tour for 800 euros on his way to study in Hong Kong. He was 21. The company advertises to young people and makes visiting North Korea easy. Here’s their website homepage:

        image

It seems to Me that Otto wasn’t very proactive at all. He was a 21 year old who fell for a marketing line. He took the poster off the wall and put it on the floor at 02:00 on New Years Day, after a night of partying and drinking.

He chose to travel to North Korea. That is an immutable fact.

He was a 21 year old who fell for a marketing line.

Was he from earth? If so, he had full access to knowledge about what North Korea is actually like prior to taking proactive steps to enter the country.

It sounds like this was very important to you. Enjoy the dopamine hit i guess?

Anyway, you said he proactively worked through a difficult process.

You cannot passively land in North Korea.

Young Pioneers made it easy for him.

Go ahead and give me the most compelling invite to North Korea that you can think of. If you are unable to do so on your own, just cheat and use the irresistible ask of the Young Pioneers.

In return, I promise to give my honest feedback in terms of any changes in desire to visit North Korea.
