• There’s something to be said about reducing a genre to the absolute simplest form and then execute the technical hell out of it. Like if a 5-star Michelin chef suddenly walked into a McDonalds and made the best damn McDonalds Hamburger you ever sank your teeth into. “It’s just a McDonalds’ hamburger!” you would cry as tears stream down your cheeks.

what if there was a man in south korea with social mobility

ngl I would watch the shit out of that show

I genuinely do not understand how Solo Leveling got the adaptation it did. Like it has no real story, no real characters, it’s just stuff happens for several hours then it’s over, and the literal only quality at all that it has is the absolutely gorgeous spectacle of its lavishly animated fight scenes and the way Hiroyuki Sawano’s score perfectly controls the tension and emotion of every scene to the point that the most vapid, pointless bullshit ever gives you chills, things that its dogshit longform webcomic source material completely lacks.

It’d be like Ctrl-Alt-Delete getting picked up for an adaptation by James Cameron and scored by Trent Reznor or some shit.

It’s pure spectacle. Close friend of mine would rave about it but always clarify that it lacked any story whatsoever. He’d go on and on about how it’s the best anime he had seen in a year but if I asked a question about characters they had very little to say. It’s slop, he knew it was slop, but it was good slop. I can’t judge, we all have our own taste in slop I think.

Solo Leveling has no right to be as good as it is lol…it should absolutely be isekai slop garbage that no one watches, yet it’s still a “good” show. I think it’s because it’s complete slop that doesn’t do weird ass harem shit or moralizing or exposition dumps. It’s just some guy punching monsters to death.

Oh no the anime is a gorgeous spectacle and very fun and inoffensive, despite being completely empty slop. Like the most story it has is something like “imagine if one-punch man was in Hunter x Hunter and he solved the chimera ant arc by just going and punching it immediately!”, but goddamn if it doesn’t look better doing it than almost anything else while being further elevated by a phenomenal soundtrack. I would actually recommend watching it.

It’s just I don’t get how that big ball of literally no substance or particular quality got picked up and elevated into that level of gorgeous spectacle slop.

I think it’s just that it was one of the first Korean webtoons to blow up outside of Korea. Definitely agree that the adaptation is shocking, having read it it’s completely undeserving of any and all effort.
