Honestly didn’t know much about it other than what I had seen and heard through popular media. I knew it was bad yk but as usual it is so much worse than I imagined. I’m in awe of Vietnamese resilience, especially knowing how hard they fought the French and Japanese occupation not long before this invasion.
It was also great to learn that My Lai was not an aberration but standard procedure. Very comforting.
Surprisingly many correlations to modern Israeli policy in Gaza. The establishment of free fire jones that were poorly communicated to vietnamese locals who wandered into them looking for food in particular.
I think reading stuff like this makes it hard to tell how much shit has changed yk? Reading something like this makes me look at the world and think, “oh it’s always been this way huh” but has it really? Haven’t things gotten materially worse? How do you even measure that? I guess it doesn’t really matter, the fight against imperialism and capitalism doesn’t gain or lose necessity because “things” have gotten relatively worse or better. It’s just odd.
No real purpose to this post just writing out my thoughts. I do recommend the book though, very well written.
I’ve been trying to find a book about the American Vietnam War written by a Vietnamese person and translated into English.
