We’ve been on holiday with two dogs. The last few days have been so hot that we could go out with them only early in the morning. Thankfully the place we are staying has stone walls and seemingly good loft insulation that moderate temperature fluctuations.
How have you been coping?
I’ve got this life-hack called living in Shetland.
Honestly, we’ve had rain, mist, wind and 8 degrees weather most of the week. Hearing about the heatwave the rest of the country is ‘enduring’ is grim. Every fibre of my being is yearning for a sunny beer garden.
Hang in there. I’m originally from a fair bit further North, although less moist than what you are enduring. I continue to favour the “not heatwave” conditions.
Close all windows and curtains between 8am and 9pm. Fans pointed out of the upstairs windows in the evening.

Depending on the fan 50cm or more from the window is about right for max flow

Badly
Mostly I have not. The idea of running a hosepipe directly from the kitchen tap to my face becomes more appealling by the moment
My cat seems to be enjoying it, at least. Trying to get some vicarious happiness through him
My previous 2 flats were hotter inside versus outside during summer.
Everyone recommends keeping windows and curtains closed, but it made no difference for me.
I’d assume if my flat was hotter inside than outside, then having my windows open could not hurt. I could never figure out something that worked and my old London flat hit 37.5 Celsius once.
My new flat is on the ground floor at the back of the building in the shade all day and so much cooler. But I on,y have windows on kne side so getting a nice breeze going when I want might not work.
Hit a maximum of 25 in my flat this week thankfully, no fan or aircon.
Fighting fire with fire! Turning up the heating, wrapping ourselves in hot water bottles, and wearing multiple layers. Yeeeeeaaah! Take that heat wave.
Oh hang about. No. I have heat stroke 🫠🥺.
Bungalow life is a bit rubbish in this weather, I didn’t realise that unlike a house, where bedroom windows can stay open at night, in a bungalow you are stuck with vented only - because security, but more importantly flying biting things predominately stay at the same height as single story house eaves. Damn I hate trying to sleep in a 25C hot box just because I can’t leave the windows open.
AC is carrying hard
It’s pretty uncomfortable when I have been out doing any kind of manual labour outside. Planted a shitload of potatoes and was dipping in sweat.
Inside isn’t too bad yet. Struggling to cool my house overnight but the weather seems to be cooling again before inside becomes too hot.
Yeah I was doing perfectly fine until I made the critical error of attempting to move one (1) box and passed out from heat exhaustion
Get up early and open all the windows before the sun comes up above the trees. That reduces the temperature by about 5c. Beyond that, cool showers are nice.
Got AC for the first time this year but I can’t get the window kit to fit. On the plus side, our new house is better insulated and we moved to a quieter area so we can have the bedroom window open a bit at night without being disturbed by as many drunk people. It’s 22°C in the bedroom at the minute which isn’t great but not so bad that the AC needs running, I’ll have to figure it out for the summer months though.
I literally lay awake at night dreaming of 22C. I’ve got 26C currently. Almost a waste of time trying to lay on the bed any time soon.
I embrace it becauze the other half of the year is like -20 / -30 and that can frig right off
Sleeping downstairs, windows open overnight and close during the day.
Also gave in and brought an aircon so hopefully that helps when it turns up.
