I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Xbox, is in fact, Xbox on PC or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, PC plus Xbox. Xbox is not a gaming system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning PC system made useless by the PC data-extracting utilities, forced Copilot integration and bloated system components comprising a full OS as defined by Microsoft.

I’m convinced that Microsoft’s routinely incomprehensible naming schemes are deliberately designed to make it more difficult for people to discuss anything about their products in detail.

You just throw up your hands in confusion and frustration and avoid formulating an actual precise opinion.

I used to work for them, over a decade ago now, and I could barely stand it or keep it straight back then.

They can’t possibly actually think this shit makes any sense from a marketing appeal perspective… so… yep, I think it is a deliberate obfuscation tactic.

I’m not sure which generation it was at but the last time I considered buying an Xbox console I gave up because figuring out which one was the good one was too much of a hassle.

Please sir, I’d like to purchase the Sexbox One.

        No, wait, I mean… the ExBox Series S… X?

        Series Box X …

        head implodes

My personal ‘why the fuck did they name it this’ thing is…

        The Windows Subsystem for Linux.

        No. Nope.

It is a Linux subsystem, within Windows, so it should be ‘the Linux Subsystem for Windows’.

Its like they actively despise English grammar.

It doesn’t help that they’re all called variations on Xbox X Series 1 X Plus PC AI Co-pilot. There should be some sort of award given to companies who are committed to terrible names over generations of the product.

Say what you want about Sony but at least they understand how the name things, PS1 PS2 PS3 PS4 PS5 What’s the next one? PS6

Sony is godawful at naming anything that isn’t a PlayStation. Look at their headphones or phones. I used to use the Sony Xperia 5 III. Which was the midrange model. The top shelf one was the Xperia 1 III.

Sony also had the idea to write PSX as a short name because they intended to make three generations. When they released the ps2 they wrote PSY like five times, realized it sounded stupid and dropped the whole idea.

They make reference to something called, “the Xbox PC ecosystem” as if that’s a thing I’ve ever heard of.

But they also link to this GitHub repo which says “This is a sample specific to XBOX on PC.”

What is the difference between Xbox PC and XBOX on PC? And if it runs on PC, what does Xbox got to do with anything?
