The fact that the White Devil is not there is pretty blasphemous.
Edit: is it just that new generations don’t know about Nanoha? Did it die after StrikerS?
really glad someone mentioned nanoha.
post-strikers nanoha was really niche. vivid got an incomplete adaptation and the sequel movies were weird since they created a new continuity and fandom got split on opinions. on the manga side, fandom got split on the vivid side and the force side and as far as i remember, none did really well (force even got cancelled)
there is a new series on the movie continuity happening soon but the trailer is selling a very edgy tone so i doubt it will be very popular. not sure how begginer friendly it will be since it’s using nanoha as a subtitle.
That’s too bad, the original -> A’s -> StrikerS series was pretty great if I remember (been a minute since I watched).
Nanoha-mama and Fate-mama was pretty peak though.
fully agree. the first 3 series are great together even with all their problems.
some people didn’t like strikers because it went to a more realistic setting (more militar less magic) but i think it was the natural next step for the story they were writing. the sequel movies try to keep the more magical side and they barely aged the characters so it ends up feeling like just another episode.
on the other hand, the force manga continued the strikers formula, aging all the characters and having new protagonists. sadly, the story is very generic battle shounen style so it’s not great but seeing most of the old cast with new lives was really nice.
nanoha-mama and fate-mama
I love how much effort the Strikers writers did to show how the two were a couple without explicitly saying anything.

The rest are familiar but I can’t remember what series they’re from
Thank you for your encyclopedic knowledge of Pretty Cure and very good knowledge of magical girls and anime girls in general. I did start reading the Esperanto translation of the Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch Aqua manga a while ago but I guess the character design didn’t leave a lasting impression. Full Moon O Sagashite is apparently on my PTW; I knew it was familiar but I couldn’t find it no matter what I searched, but I guess I should’ve just searched my PTW to begin with. Fine and Rein were two characters I was particularly curious about just because they stand out as having particularly cute designs in the fanart. And of course the qipao-wearing odango-head is called “Meirin” — that’s like a whole trope, isn’t it? That every Chinese girl in anime is called Meiling.
I can only assume that the ones I could identify were all ones you were already familiar with, too.
So, the following ten characters remain unidentified:
Broom riders: left two
Top row: center
Fourth row: left of center, right of center, fourth from right
Fifth row: far right, second from left, center
Bottom row: second from right
I just checked another list of magical girl series from that period and I think I’ve identified one from a series I haven’t seen
Broom riders
- Arusu (Tweeny Witches) - the one standing on the broom
I read a ton of shoujo manga as a kid in the late 90s and early 00s; specifically when they were still being released in Hana to Yume, Ciao, Lala, Ribon, Nakayoshi, etc. but it was sporadic so I did have to look a lot of stuff up like “Oh, I remember this, it was released in the 90s in Ciao I think” and then find the name of the series from there, same with the names of the PreCure protags as I’m actually terrible with remembering that stuff.
From what I can tell, all the characters are pre-2020 so far (none of the newer PreCure series, latest in the illustration is Star Twinkle which was 2019-2020) and the earliest is Sailor Moon (1991), and they’ve all had anime adaptions, so you’ll be looking for magical girl anime series between those years.
