According to RGVK Dagestan, Pierre Aidjo moved from Cameroon to Dagestan’s capital Makhachkala in 2009 for higher education, and while studying in Makhachkala he ended up becoming a famous singer throughout Dagestan and married a local. He performs Dagestani folk pop in many different languages across Dagestan, and seems to enjoy this role he’s taken on as a cultural bridge between Cameroon and Dagestan (if not Africa and Russia more broadly).

This song is in Lezgian with a few lines in French, I think. Lezgian, spoken by 600K~800K people in southern Dagestan and northern Azerbaijan, is the most spoken language of the Lezgic branch of the Northeast Caucasian family, and I think the third most spoken Northeast Caucasian language overall, after Chechen and Avar. Other Lezgic languages are Udi (the ancient form of which is known as Caucasian Albanian), Aghul, Tabasaran, Kryts, Budukh, Jek, Rutul, Tsakhur, and Archi. Archi is notable for being the world’s most grammatically complex language.
