Though I don’t want to test the last part (getting fat to increase chances of surviving winter) I decided to test the first bit as an n=1 uncontrolled experiment
While completely satisfied on pemmican I ate a mandarin orange. It immediately caused massive food noise for more of the same. It made me hungry enough to eat the pemmican I had left on my plate as well as another piece
No surprise that the modern western diet makes people obese, it’s like perpetual summer
Modern fruit is bred to be a lot sweeter so I imagine it’s primarily the sugars that increase appetite or food noise. Mandarin oranges are a prime example of this.
It’s so sweet these days that often times they can’t even be fed to frugivorous or omnivorous animals because the sugar content puts them in poor health. (Diabetes usually)
The purpose of eating fruit seems to be for hydration with the added bonus of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It also offers an instant energy source at that, so likely very useful to our ancestors whilst they were persistence hunting.
Certainly would have been in your best interest to eat as much fruit as possible as it is a fleeting resource (rots quickly and desirable to other animals) so that likely influenced how much we gravitate to sweet things as a species. I don’t believe the food noise would have been nearly as intense though, not being purposely bred for sweetness and all.
I’m careful about the fruit I eat because so much of it is pure sugar. I usually pick things with high fibre to counteract the appetite stimulating effects of sugar and I always eat the skin and seeds if they are edible. Things like granny smith apples, pears, berries, underripe kiwis and bananas.
I’ve been really enjoying korean melons as the whole plant is edible (rind and seeds) and it doesn’t give any food noise for me as its only mildly sweet. If anything it quells my fruit and by extension sugar craving. Hydration is a plus during the summer.
This was the first fruit I have eaten in the last three years on carnivore; the only fruits I commonly ate in the 5 years before were capsicum, tomato, and berries while doing keto
That makes sense then. If you haven’t had fruit in a long time it’s going to hit you a lot harder than someone who eats it regularly.
I don’t know if that’s it, when I was on the common diet I needed the highest dose of allopurinol to prevent gout and during that time I was following the guidelines and having at least 5 serves a day of fruit and vegetable
Your gut microbiome has changed since then I imagine. If you stopped eating fruit then whatever gastrointestinal flora that subsisted on it to survive probably decreased substantially. That could change how your body reacts to a reintroduction of something you used to eat before.
Your body also gets used to things if you eat them often. If I cut down on sugar for a while then eat it again I find my body reacts a lot more strongly to it than if I eat it regularly.
I used to drink 4x4 coffee a long time ago (4 sugar 4 milk) and that felt normal to me. I stopped doing that and quit cold turkey for about a year (switched to plain tea) and when I tried my usual 4x4 again it tasted cloying sweet and made me feel a little sick even.
I could probably work up to drinking it comfortably but even though I drank it for years before every day I couldn’t suddenly start up again.
Yes, what you eat does change your microbiome. I don’t think there has been a study on carnivore diet faeces, my last poo test didn’t come up with anything
Carbs make people hungrier, so that lines up with the “we have easy energy, lets bulk up” hypothesis
its funny we don’t have the same response to fat, i.e. lots of free energy can be sitting in front of you, but you only eat just enough… why did we evolve so carbs are the super trigger?
I have similar experience when i try a seasonal fruit, it’s so hard to just have one bite!
Though now I’m worried I might get a gout attack, which I didn’t think of when I came up with this idea
So far an hour or two later I’m still ok, so I’m hopeful. Though I’m not out of the woods until tomorrow mid morning.
The food noise has gone
document everything you can, if you do get a attack you can map out your triggers!
fructose mega dosing! but I don’t think a single orange will be enough to throw out your fructose metabolism.
A single mandarin was enough. It doesn’t take much fructose.
That is rough! I hope you recover quickly
I will :)
Last gout attack was after a small tub of yoghurt which had about 8g of sugar, so a single fruit could be enough, though it’s buffered by fibre which the sugar in sweet yoghurt isn’t
