there’s a reason why doctors and other first responders are explicitly told to never give false hopes to anyone. humans imagine a future, anticipate the relief etc. and when that turns out to not be true that’s soul crushing. i think we have to apply this to the goddamn kids. stop telling them that they have to be obedient only as kids but adulthood has more freedoms that’s just not true at all. the reason why i’m in a really bad place right now is because my current situation does not meet my expectations due to lies about life after becoming an adult. if people framed things honestly then i wouldnt be half as crushed honestly.
truth is, life does not get better after reaching 18 at all. your parents dont magically change and stop pressuring you into what they want. sure you CAN legally rent and get a job but that doesnt mean you will have the capability to do that. stop selling these kids a future that’s not true or possible.
As a kid i was always told that university is the magic gateway to a perfect life and “once you have that piece of paper you can do anything.” All it means in reality is a lifetime of debt. Everything we are sold is a lie.
Children are basically chattel slaves. In that context, by comparison, being an adult can be incredibly liberating.

Some basically are, but there’s a wide variety, from oppression/exploitation to negligent levels of freedom.
I feel american hyperindividualism creates a picture for people that by 18 they will be their own person, on their own, totally free to do as they please. And that they won’t be shackled to their parents or anyone else. Here in the balkans people in their 40s live with their parents, but that is likely more an economic issue along with different family dynamics. Financial freedom (and moreover freedom to live as one wishes) is incredibly difficult to obtain by design, and is usually only achievable for the bourgeois or petty bourgeois. If the workers have freedom to live as they please, then the bourgeosie cannot exploit the workers for their value, and thus the system starts collapsing (really bulshitting my way through this if you can’t tell, point is that financial freedom is contradictory to exploitation). Time (tends to) heal all wounds. For now I think it’s best to plan ahead as to getting to a point where you can be financially comfortable, enough to be able to live on your own, college or not.

the thing with propaganda is that usually their targets get used to believe it even after experiencing it as lies because it’s rooted in the mind as “i was trying to be free based on the teachings of my parents and society, and now i’m poor…i’ve probably made a mistake because the system works, i wont let my children suffer the same fate as me!”
