And this is why my kid refuses to touch school lunches, and instead takes his own stuff in from home. But I realize that’s not practical for a lot of kids. We really should be doing better for them that this terrible shit.

I’m reminded of a scene from a Jamie Oliver show from years ago where he went to America to continue his crusade against bad school lunches. He shows a bunch of elementary school kids the raw goop that’s used to make chicken nuggets. Basically all the sinew and unwanted parts of a chicken that have been blended together into a disgusting slime. Lots of "ewwww!"s from all the kids as he shows them how it’s seasoned and breaded and put into a deep fryer. Then when cooked chicken nuggets come out of the fryer the kids are all excited and happily eating them. And Oliver is left stunned and speechless, because of the complete disconnect/amnesia between the raw ingredients and how they were cooked and what the final product is.

    That’s disgusting.

These are obviously anecdotal but there’s a thru-line here: packaged, pre-prepared (never fresh) and always stretched with starch or even worse filler. As cheap as possible.

There’s a film by Michael Moore that compares schools around the world and their lunches. That is anecdotal, too, but I know from experience (working in schools) that it holds some truth.

This is what America does to its children. As G Carlin once said: pro-life only until you are born.
