According to machine translations of Heesify and BBC, Shimaali Axmed Shimaali (also spelled Ahmed) was born in Qoryooley in the Lower Shebelle region of the South West State of Somalia, and first joined Somalia’s music scene in the 1980s through some sort of song contest. He moved to Mogadishu and went on to join Bakaka Band, which was “later renamed to Durdur” — I have to wonder if that’s the actual Dur-Dur Band, the internationally famous one, or if Shimaali was a member of some other Somali band that happens to have the same name. Because Dur-Dur Band was never known as Bakaka Band as far as I’m aware, and Shimaali Axmed Shimaali doesn’t show up on any lists of Dur-Dur Band members (except Discogs’, sort of). Though I know if nothing else that Shimaali was in contact with Sahra Abukar Dawo, who was absolutely a member of Dur-Dur Band. Shimaali in the '80s also worked a lot as a vocalist with a band called Libaaxyada Maaweeliska Banaadir during their concerts. Shimaali was apparently known for covering Xasan Diiriye songs specifically, including most specifically a song called “Ha hawlin naftee halaaga ka daa”… Except I look up that song title and the only name I can attach to it is Maxamed Yusuf Ahun. It’s at this point I start wondering if the machine translation is too poisoned by AI hallucinations to be useful for anything, or if Heesify itself might be some sort of Somali AI slop, and yet I keep going. I don’t think Heesify is slop, the text looks authentic to me.

Anyways, it seems like Shimaali looks up to a famous Somali poet called Maxamuud Cabdullaahi Ciise, nicknamed “Sangub” and often known as Maxamuud Sangub. Shimaali performed with Sangub at the Somalia National Peace Conference in Arta, Djibouti in 2000. At that same conference, Shimaali also performed “a song about peace with the band of Bashiir Ibraahin Cabdi, a member of [the center-right conservative party] Horseed.”

After the outbreak of the Somali Civil War, i.e. in the '90s probably, Shimaali moved to Saudi Arabia, where he lived for over 20 years. He only returned to Somalia in 2017, when he started some sort of business in Mogadishu.
