This meme makes me curious about when custom avatars/pfps became a common thing. I honestly can’t remember any avatars/pfps from when I was a teenager. I don’t think I joined anything that could’ve had them until I was 13, but I’m certain that it had only a minute selection of avatars with which to choose. GameFAQs didn’t and still doesn’t have any. Did AIM have custom avatars or was it a curated bunch of pics that you could choose from as well?
Memory is a bit fuzzy on AIM but I do remember having some custom sprite art pics I used. Traditional php forums for the longest time allowed pfps too.
