“Can you finish this in the next hour?” “Nope!”

I need that kind of confidence.

In my line of work I have to say that constantly.

Can you add that button? Should be easy, maybe by tomorrow? -> Nope, we will need 3 million backend changes; maybe in 6 months.

Edit: WTF really?! Just fucking use AI to do it. -> Nope. AI can’t do it and even if it can you will just create a bunch of technical debt.

I used to work for a humanitarian organisation, that is to say, I was overworked and underpayed. During my time there, I developed what I think is the perfect answer to pushy bosses who put you under time pressure to deliver:

Do you want the job done quickly ? Or do you want the job done well?

(Neutral tone, neutral facial expressions, average voice volume are a must)

I’ve changed jobs often ever since. To this day, no boss or client has chosen ‘quick’, questioned the veracity of my statement/question (this obviously means that you must, indeed, deliver quality) or had the nerve to answer ‘both’.

This kind of confidence requires both the experience in the subjects involved and the life experience backed by self-awareness/maturity indeed…

I have a headache and the coffee isn’t working. I read that one heading as “avoid instant reptiles”.

That’s right, I already avoid instant reptiles. I prefer the slightly slower reptiles. Turtles are very cool. 🐢

I read the first part of your comment and thought “but that’s what it says” and then read the second part, went back to the first and then I realized.

      Brain like turtle. 🐢

Mostly great, but “avoid instant replies” I don’t agree with. When I’m having a conversation I like to have a conversation, not break it up into one sentence each way every few hours.

That’s not what that’s about. “Avoid instant replies” means you shouldn’t feel the need to drop everything and immediately reply to every message you get, regardless of importance. Some things can be left for later. The people who matter will understand, and the people who don’t understand don’t matter.

    I love this poster.

Unfortunately I think it was just as relevant well before the AI craze of the past few years. Plenty of shitty humans were happy to create psychologically manipulative algorithms that care only about engagement.

When is garbo generative pre-trained ‘ai’ done? Anytime someone asks me about ai I’ll just ask them when real AGI will be available. Most people think current chat gpt is real AI but it’s not even close, it fakes it but has no real understanding.

Yeah, I’ve read too many Culture novels to put up with an “AI” that doesn’t actually understand anything, just pretends to. I would be willing to engage with an artificial mind, but not with a mindless autocomplete.

It’s like they invented the “mouth” of a potential future AGI, and call that AGI itself, while the brain is still missing.

    “Where are you?”

    “Right behind you.…”

My grandfather became a hollow dragon to protect a particular rock formation, so if I ever heard his voice saying that while I’m anywhere but that cave I’ll jump outta my scales with a frightened yeep! I love him though.

    Thank you… of course… absolutely…

Lifeless, awful, void-empty “AI” or LLM-generated sorrow/noise has no value or authorship, is based on stolen art, human effort of now unknown people…
Not a single soul will ever be responsible for its unsupervised nor “relatively” nonsense output, I believe…

What has a purpose/experience, or actually important value is… your time and work, which is always invaluably priceless… always a miracle to cherish and learn from…

Regarding the second panel, “Make Ugly Things”, well, though some are making it so others may call it “ugly” but practice will always improve it to the point it will be called “perfect”, I believe.

For example, an artist I noticed recently, huapi67, is known for crafting ineffably magnificent artworks with bare hands and napkins/cloth on plain material canvas…

But my grandparents are dead, my parents are “adult orphans” (people who in adulthood have both of their parents become dead)
