for the really old guys… originally developed for the theatrical release of return of the jedi in 1983. spun-off by lucasfilm in the early 00s so it could be sold to creative.
for the really really old guys, it was named after lucas’ first feature film, from 1971, thx 1138

Disney are about to launch ‘Infinity Vision’ which seems like a similar certification process.
It’s claimed that this is, in part, because Avengers: Doomsday got delayed and is now releasing while Dune 3 has already block booked the IMAX screens, and Disney wanted a premium screen experience that, presumably, can be charged more for.
Infinity vision is, from what I can tell, a screen size and 4k projector.
TIL movie theater protectors aren’t higher resolution than home TVs or projectors. Many are still 2k (basically1080p). Even IMAX.
Obviously they’re better contrast ratio, brightness, etc than a consumer projector. I just really assumed they were at 6k or 8k these days, at least for nicer ones.
The quality comes mainly from callibration. Having colour accuracy, even field illumination, and perfect focus can make 2k look very impressive at screen size/distance to screen ratios of a theatre.
In my limited experience even brightness and contrast is questionable, especially with imax. And they’re rife with dead pixels. The one advantage theater has is good speakers and sound isolation
