That’s pretty cool, thanks for sharing Yog!

It’s notable that this tech only works if you have a massive integrated industrial base though. You need the smelters and steel mills already there to make it economical. I’m also curious what they do with all the salt (NaCl) being extracted.

Incidentally, this is also a great illustration of how infantile the whole solar punk idea is. China is what solar punk looks like in practice, and to get there you need massive industry.

Very true, though the current Chinese model has much to be critiqued still. While the awesome power of their industry is primarily harnessed towards feeding insatiable Western hyper-consumerism, no amount of clean energy breakthroughs is going to suffice. I hope to see in the not too distant future a pivot towards raising the living standards at home and the BRICS bloc/global South more generally. (it’s already happening, I mean more intensely and with greater focus)

Actually, that hasn’t been the case for a while. Today, trade with the west accounts for a fairly small percentage of the overall economy in China.

            Fair point.

Let me rephrase my statement - president Xi turn off the treat spigot, let the white devils feel the hollowness inside!

Jokes aside, looks like I need to read up on the current state of things, as I’m clearly operating on outdated impressions and not materially grounded in my analysts
