              🤦‍♂️😆

I just made a user group called media, then made the jellyfin user part of that group, then made new files created in my media folders automatically be created with the media group as well as the group read permission. Solved the issue forever for me. qBitTorrent creates the files, but needn’t worry about any permissions other than being able to create files in that folder. (User qbt is also part of the media group.)

Ah, okay. Was the separate partition a necessity in your case or just a preference?

For some reason that didn’t work for me. All new files kept getting made with wrong permissions.

In the end I learnt Docker which solved everything forever 😂

Did you do this using the special permission for groups? SGID?

That’s the magic thing that makes new files get created with the same group permission as the parent directory.

Or do you remember which part of that setup didn’t work for you? I feel like a detective now… 🕵️‍♂️

We had a moron that ran “sudo chmod -R 777 /” once. Sudo privileges were greatly reigned in.

What happens if you do that? I know what the command does and that running it is a terrible idea, but what actually happens to a system if you do this?

It’s worse than even what others have said. There are bits set in inodes other than the rwx for owner, group and other. Most notably when it hits /dev it will completely fuck up your devices.

Well one of the things is you can no longer sudo, since it checks the permissions on the sudors file. Good news is you can now edit the shadow file and set a new root password.

I did that with an “rm - rf” once. It was back in the olden days where we mounted all systems root via nfs. Oh abd nfs use to transfer root privileges.

Took out 1.5 machines before I thought, this is taking a while.

You’d be surprised how many don’t. Or it may be that they meant to run what they ran. The old, too busy asking if they could but not if they should.

And then you get hit with another permissions error because the file was labeled as unconfined_u:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t:s0, and it really needed to be unconfined_u:object_r:httpd_sys_rw_content_t:s0.

One of those moments… you know you’re autistic, but think you know how/what people think when you look at them, … then some meme comes along and you just got reminded that, yeah, it’s sometimes a problem.

Assuming it’s just me, and most people have a specific read what the woman in the picture is (probably?) thinking…

It took me a bit because I was trying to figure out what the scene might be or the context. Then I realized it’s Ana de Armas and I think the meme is just saying that chmod 777 looks really attractive when it’s 2 AM and you just want to be done.

Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is it just a way to hide a broken heart?

Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep.
They just lie there, and they die there.

Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely, lovely work of art?

Nah, I actually think a lot of people post things like this where there is absolutely no way for anyone to have a clue what the person in the photo is thinking. Imo this is one like that. No clue what this woman is thinking and I don’t think there is any indication whatsoever.
