When I was working in a chemistry lab and a bio student, I had no clue what it was. Was using it to improve aeration of a liquid. I assumed it was some small molecule with two -OH groups and maybe thought it was funny its name was similar to estrogen, but didn’t think someone would consider using estrogen for such a weird thing.
