I feel Tyson cares more about the fame and being right instead of actually teaching
I’ll disagree.
I think he can be a bit of an ass, but he is also the victim of out of context clipping a lot.
Man I knew this would bring out the trolls.
How is an arbitrary list of people able to rile folks up so much? If you think Green or Cox deserves a place on a list over some of these other people: MAKE YOUR OWN LIST, you could do it with just as little effort as it takes to criticize someone else for contributing content.
Don’t know why your getting butthurt over ppl critiquing content on a website thats built around creating and engaging with content and their creators.
This is like getting pissed ppl don’t like your painting after hanging it in gallery. You don’t want ppls opinion leave your shit off the internet
Yeah! Death to all literary critics! Whatever you get for a work of art is YOUR BUSINESS, I don’t want to be exposed to it!
I’ll think of you as superficial
I think Hank Green deserves this better than Neil
Agreed. Hank Green has Mister Rogers energy not Neil.
Steve Irwin, too.
Levar Burton>Neil DeGrasse Tyson
While we’re at it, let’s get some Steve Irwin in there.
and the stingray that killed him; they would have been friends
What? No.
Yknow, that one you could almost get away with by finding some star trek visor clip art.
But, hey, I got my NDT gripes but I am 100 A-OK with him on here. This random meme from the Interwebz.
Dig this either way honestly.
Why not both?
It’s hard to blame Niel entirely but the newer Cosmos was terrible. Nothing of substance and way too much talk about religion. I don’t mind Niel but he can really be an insufferable cunt irl
He really suffers from, “Everyone is asking me questions, I must know everything!” He is very, very, very willing to use his same pompous, authoritative voice when confidently discussing things he knows nothing about in front of a world audience. The man has no shame whatsoever.
Anyone criticizing with “why do you put x on there but not y” allow me to introduce you to creating your own original content, you can put whoever you want on a picture! It’s within your power!
I suppose that might direct the attention of people like you towards yourselves, and that would be awful wouldn’t it?
Maybe think on the previous line a bit before you post your criticism, and ask yourself why you haven’t made and posted the list the way you’d like it to be.
Reminds me of people harassing the Ladybird browser devs for declining a PR that changed “he” to “they” in the build steps. If you really cared, you would make meaningful contributions to the project before virtue signaling on a text file
Edit: as an aside, I know of an open source project that is only one or two steps away from being affiliated with Nazis. A transgender woman started contributing and now all those Nazi friends respect her. That’s how you actually change minds - not by
Ree
ing with zero effort. Why did you use x and y in your example and not a and b? How am I supposed to accept x and y?!
Why did they put xy on there but no xx?
Oooh y’know who they missed: Steve Irwin. Yeah we’re gonna need a part II.
Crap. Okay who wants to go back to the Meme Council®?
Honestly, I’d probably drop Tyson for Irwin.
checks rulebook
It is allowable.
Hank Green should be up there too maybe.
Please, god no. Can we compromise with Tom Scott or Matt Parker or something?
What’s wrong with Hank?
I’m not convinced I can articulate it well. He seems, well, fine , but I can’t stand him. Never have been able to.
I understand that I have a parasocial relationship with the guy seeing that I’ve never actually met him and I’ve been watching his content for well over a decade but the sheer amount of work that he has put into educational content speaks for itself. He and John are also a big part of my journey out of a cult and into acceptance of my queer identity. If anyone deserves praise for helping people learn, it’s Hank and John.
That’s understandable - I’m sure some of my celebrated creators would rankle a bit for you as well. I just never really could watch any of their content. When I thought it was an interesting subject and watched, I wouldn’t make it long.
What did he teach? How to jump on any crocodile? How to annoy every animal? This guy was laughed at in Germany, I still wonder what makes him a hero in the US.
He taught us all life is beautiful. He taught us that we should appreciate the hell out of it.
He taught you that it’s okay to abuse animals and exploit them for fame and money. Wake up. There’s a reason you don’t see serious animal activists and conservationists acting like this, or supporting Irwin. He peddles a message that is compatible with the public’s fucked up notions of animal ethics while making them feel good about their treatment of animals, with the flesh of an animal that suffered atrocity literally purifying between their teeth. If you consume animal products, you never learned “all life is beautiful.” You learned the commercial-compatible Disnified version of that idea.
Hey jerkface.
Maybe this message got tainted a little by the fact, that he wasnt able to respect the animals. Whatever, may just be different cultures. Here we show love to nature by silently watching the animals, and to try not to interrupt them to much, but that doesn’t make for a exciting tv-show.
He wanted to touch them, yes. He said, “look at this [typically feared and/or reviled animal]!” And he’d hold it and look into its eyes and share the with the camera (metaphorically, with us) and say “She’s a beauty!”
It’s not David Attenborough, I’ll give you that. It’s very much hands-on, and I can see how that could be misinterpreted.
You’ve just insulted an Australian and I would gladly call you the c word but lemmy rules
I will gladly take the additional unt, because I probably deserve it! Have a nice day. :)
If you actually watched any of his show, or any of his zoo displays, you would know that he spent much more time discussing the details of the wildlife and their habitat than just “jumping on crocodiles”, including relocation/rehabilitation and the effects of man-made habitat distraction.
man made habitat distractions seems very ironic in his case. But I guess we only got the crocodile jumping parts over here. They actually made me hate this guy… Nice to hear, that he wasnt just a guy doing everything for some views.
How is it ironic when he essentially does the same as catch, tag, and release like scientific researchers do but with a camera pointed at him? The animals aren’t harmed and their habitat isn’t destroyed, they’re just inconvenienced for a few minutes
He got laughed at in germany because these illiterate fucks can’t deal with subtitles and had to dub over it with a german australian accent. Of course he comes over as a joke.
Most of us actually can read english quite well… it’s usually the US guys knowing only 2/3 of one language. But yeah, lots of foreign tv shows get ruined by german dubs.
If they include Sagan as Tyson’s predecessor, then why not Nye’s predecessor, Mr. Wizard?
Fair point. Someone please contact the Meme Council®.
I shall blast forth the notes of summoning!
Medieval monks were wild. Where did you find that photo?
Sagan as Tyson’s predecessor
I assume they include Sagan as Sagan.
He deserves to be in the image as much as anyone else in it, and definitely several orders of magnitude more than Tyson.
I’d agree with you, but much of the younger generation didn’t have the pleasure of growing up with him. Many youngsters only know him as the “pale blue dot” guy.
Those youngsters need Cosmos. And I mean Sagan’s version.
James Burke’s Connections would be nice, too.
No joke. I’ll never forget when I saw the episode on how Eratosthenes correctly estimated the circumference of the earth with sticks and shadows. It completely blew my mind!
Just goes to show how amazing PBS actually is. Most of the people listed on the shirt or in the comments had some kind of an affiliation with PBS. Support your local stations!
Mr. Wizard gets no love. Also, I second the Hank Green > N. D. Tyson motion.
That’s not how you take a heroic educator out of context, this is how you take a heroic educator out of context:
That can’t be real, no chance. I refuse to believe it, regardless of context.
Honestly, the context is as innocent as everything else Mr. Rogers did. He was singing the song “Where is Thumbkin,” which involves lyrics for each individual finger. There’s pretty much no way to sing the song without doing that.

Whatever, I’m still saving this gif
Oh my god, I remember that song from preschool. Jesus, you could not do that today, the kids would flip out.
We need to hold people like these in high regard as a society not the constant rotation of pop stars. Funny thing is I can’t think of any women that belong on this though most of my teachers were women and they had a profound effect on my life. Dr Ruth Westheimer maybe?
Dr. Ruth for sure. Ms. Frizzle is fictional but deserves recognition. An argument could be made for Julia Child, and Dolly Parton is not primarily known for her free book program but it is incredible.
Good suggestions. I tried to look up who hosted Romper Room but apparently it was a franchise and had a different host in each location
Jane Goodall
Hi, VSauce! Michael here.
He thinks too fast and talks too fast and I can’t comprehend a damn thing he says.
The few times I looked into his videos, I thought his name was Vsauce Michael. The intro is too youtuber for me.
Hank Green as well.
Isn’t bill nye a massive arse though irl
I’d be pretty pissed off all the time if I spent years trying to educate children just to watch more than half of them grow up to be complete morons.
Particularly if you’d been talking about climate change for several decades and getting mocked and ignored by morons.
I’ve also heard that he gets approached a lot by weirdos asking odd questions. Specifically, at one talk, during the Q and A portion, getting asked highly technical questions by adults who grew up watching him and expecting him to be able to respond. I wouldn’t put too much weight on what randos on the Internet have to say about his character.
Someone I know met him and their take was “he’s even more autistic than I am.” I could see people confusing autism for being a jerk.

He did shill for Coca-Cola, which isn’t a great look.
He also had some bad takes in his more recent show, but people are too ready to believe random people on the internet on matters of character when they’ve, at max, only talked to him for 5 minutes. He’s has a net positive impact and people would better to find other targets for their energy.
I didn’t grew up with bill because that’s a very american thing, i only knew him from memes. I watched his netflix show when it aired and all i could think is that he seems like an absolute cunt.
I haven’t seen his netflic show, because why have a netflix account? Anyway, he was promoting education all his life and now we’re nose diving into a ecological collapse for reasons he warned us about. I would be a little cross as well by now.

Coca-Cola paid him to talk plastic.
Same with Neil
The crass tie son?
Replace him with the dude from Beakman’s World.
He’s more of an actor.
Wow I’d buy and rock this on a shirt!!

Who’s the one with the turtleneck?
Carl Sagan
Good one!
