Finally some good news. Loved Battlebots back in the day, I just hope there will be less bots that do nothing but flip the other one over.

From my limited understanding of the rc battle scene, the current meta is spinning kinetic weapons. Just get a hunk of metal spinning fast and go to town.

I do wish that there was a larger variety in designs and weaponry, but I’m not complaining about seeing shredded bot bits flying across the arena.

Even the Micro-bot scene is getting interesting as rc parts get cheaper and cheaper. The bar to enter is lowering daily. I’m thinking about ordering some things so my wife and I can have little driveway matches with flippers and grabbers. She wants a spinner but I don’t want to break the bank buying replacement parts…

Once you start doing spinners you are in “maybe we should have a box to fight in” because the other option is getting a shard of metal in the leg.

          a box to fight in

          Made of polycarbonate, NOT acrylic.

A friend of mine ordered acrylic “because it’s the same thing” even after I explained how acrylic will shatter and send shards of plastic at you the moment something hits it. Poly kind of grabs onto everything and flexes. Even if you puncture it, the thing isn’t getting through without dragging the whole enclosure with it.

have you seen how thick the walls of the battle box are already to protect everyone from the current levels of carnage?? with your suggestion they’d all have to be in another building!

this gif could have been text

but my point is that audience participation is a core feature of the show. removing that would greatly change the character of Battlebots for no good (in my opinion) reason. the destruction is crazy enough that we don’t need to be adding hazards that will complicate the fights a great deal

What i want in actual bots. No human controls. Robots by definition are autonomous. You put the bot in, run.exe and off it goes. It would make them have to really think about design instead of just having a whirling hammer on an rc car.

Orbitron claims to be mostly autonomous. I believe the driver still influences overall strategy but for the most part it handles second to second combat by itself. It hasn’t had much success, but shows autonomy is an area teams are exploring.

Battlebots Org themselves are also looking into other rulesets for humanoid bots and autonomous combat. It’s probably just a matter of time, but under current rules the autonomous bots will have to fight better than human operated first.
