I got a big book about special effects from the library over and over and even tried some stuff from Evil Dead before seeing it. So I wanted to see the movies themselves and it was really lucky they rented evil dead 2 instead. My dad who eas raised on Looney Tooms and stuff loved it. I for sure saw both Robocop and Alien before I was in school.
