Even been to a metal concert? There’s a 1000:1 male to female ratio. Those few girls in there know the songs better than most of the guys.

This meme seems like it was made by an incel upset that some girl he likes doesn’t even know he’s alive.

It was a trick. She knows Enter Sandman isn’t a Megadeth song, and now she knows you’re not a true metal fan.

The games over before it even started.

“guys” is used as a gender neutral term by many people, so “metal guys” doesn’t necessarily refer to male metal listeners only

The innuendo here is that it’s a guy talking to a “hot girl”, right. And they’re talking about this metal band that she “supposedly” likes. He’s demanding that she prove it by “naming one ☝️ song” by the band. She names a song by a different band.

Guy says “close enough” because boobies.

            Not at all true whatsoever.

The way the meme is sexist is the line “Name one song by [metal band].”

It implies that whenever a woman says they like a metal band, she couldn’t possibly just be taken at face value, and her word be trusted, because women couldn’t “possibly” like something typically associated with men.

You’re overthinking it: “name N song(s) by $band” is a standard question asked by gatekeepers, it can be addressed to whoever regardless of gender. Not that sexists never use that line, just that it doesn’t necessarily imply anything about women in general.

Do people still filter partners on music taste?

Maybe because I’m into extreme metal and both female fans in my county already had boyfriends, but I’ve never really cared what any partner listen to.

Not musical taste per se, but I think it’s valid to filter based on the prospects’ relationship to the artists they listen to.

The people that post celebrities getting married on their Instagram would be an immediate no-go for me, for example.

E: forgot about country. If you listen to country, ion fuck with you.

Kind of. They certainly don’t have to align with my personal tastes, but there’s a lot of music that I don’t personally care for that I have a lot of respect for. If the girl likes very different stuff than I do, she can still have excellent taste and there is a lot to talk about musically. Maybe she can help me get into stuff that didn’t initially hit for some reason, and expand my repertoire. If the girl has a godawful taste in music to where I have no respect for every artist she enjoys, she is probably not for me. This rarely happens to me though, usually it is basic taste at worst.

I mean I listen to a fuck ton of music, so if they have the same tastes as me that’s definitely a plus. Actually wanting to go to a rave with me is kinda cool. And if they were hardcore into like modern country then that’s a gigantic minus for me.

      So yes, I absolutely would.

I listen to mostly death metal and my wife is into musicals. Its really not an issue. I have gone with her to Book of Mormon (a musical), she has gone with me to metal shows… actually she used to get me back stage to several (she worked catering). Neither of us is going to choose to play the others music when we are by ourselves, but we can find a little common ground regardless.

This gatekeeping shit has always annoyed me while i was active in the goth and metal scene (which was and probably still is pretty small here, so the two tend to mix a lot).

I do only care about what shirt you wear as a global cue what style of music you might like or i like the design and artwork. The rest is really not that important.

I like a few bands where i would be hard pressed to name songs, because i only know them from streaming recommendations, which i only use while on the road; I might mark the band as a favorite, and some months later i go through my faves, check if they are still to my liking, and if they are, i make them available offline - that’s the point where i start learning album/track names.

Plus, how can I remember the name of the song when the lyrics are basically the sound of two wolverines mating.

The last part seldom is an issue for me, since i like my lyrics understandable, even if a substantial number of them might exceed the length of a telenovela-script lol

There are a few exceptions, but even those are more on the understandable side compared to how i expect a band named “Mating Wolverines” sounds - it IS an awesome bandname tho!

Because it reeks of sexism. The premise is that the person could be a poser (not knowing Megadeth songs), and this is applied mostly to women, especially when it’s based on just wearing a t-shirt : a dude with a metal shirt leads to “cool, a fellow metalhead”, a women with a metal shirt leads to “uh, is she a poser ?”.

The conclusion of being extra-fair about confusing two major bands, just after being overly picky, also implies that you have a good reason to change your mindset, and this stinks of sexist implications too.

Metalhead girls get this question way too often. If it one day crosses your mind to ask it, please at least rephrase it so it’s not accusatory. Just ask about their musical tastes or if they saw them live, like you would do with any one but not this fucking “name one song”.

I see that interpretation now. But to be honest I have spoken to lots of girls that wear band shirts, especially 70s to 90s bands that are just fashion choices. They don’t know the band.

        And that’s totally fine.

From that lens, when I see a meme like this i interpret it more charitably like ‘metal guy is excited hot lady shares his interest, asks about it’, ‘turns out it’s just a fashion choice, metal guy shrugs and accepts that it’s still a hot lady in a metal shirt’

Oh I can think of so many reasons to downvote this!

The whole “name 3 songs” thing is sexist, it’s usually said to women in band shirts. It’s boring and old.

It’s had a shit filter applied to her face. I see the exact same face everywhere. She looks like a Barbie doll.

Why metal guys? Are they more shallow than the general population? I didn’t know that was a stereotype and I’ve been to my share of metal festivals.

But that’s nothing compared to the fact it’s not very funny. It’s Facebook tier humour. Haha men are blind when boobies are involved.

I’m a metal guy. I’ve met lots of people in the scene over the years who are very gatekeepy, though I’ll admit it’s gotten better as that attitude is less socially acceptable now. It’s not just metal though, same in goth and alt scenes. So it does happen.

I do get the ‘name one song’, criticism. It’s gatekeepy. Memes are written for brevity, so for some reason I really charitably read this as “hey what’s your favourite megadeth song?”. And the metal guy response being “oh, well at least this hot girl is wearing a metal shirt this is still a win”.

Thanks for the response I see I was maybe being too generous to the meme.
