It’s been a long time since I learned about this in school but I got the impression the US government might have been grateful actually. It allowed them to negotiate de-escalation without looking like they were going soft on the Soviets by pulling out for nothing. Kinda like a suicidal person wanting to be talked out of going through with it.
Why didn’t the Soviets just relax and let it go?
I mean what was the Soviet reaction to US putting nukes in Turkey?

Bet they were. But the “clock” only went “2 minutes to midnight” (or something) when their missiles went to Cuba, not when they got to Turkey.
