    It’s true. Cursor started using Kimi. Many users periceved this as a rug pull/enshitification because they feel like it was heavily implied that OpenAI was backing all their API calls. Some considered it a potential security issue (Kimi was trained in China, news reports probably didn’t clarify that Cursor was most likely running Kimi in a US-controlled datacenter). Kiro started offering DeepSeek and Qwen. QwenCode just came out recently and is pretty usable on it’s own even in the free tier. Windsurf has always had random mystery LLMs (wtf is SWE-1.5? it’s shit but nobody knows where it came from). Antigravity offers a model (an option that’s not Gemini or Claude that I don’t remember the name) that I don’t know the origin of.

    Kiro is probably the most clear and transparent on this subject: you can still use Claude, DeepSeek and Qwen use significantly less credits, and the user was never tricked or mislead about which model they were using.

      I mean the costs are literally an order of magnitude lower for either using Chinese services or even just running your own on prem models. And, while top tier models like Claude are better, they’re just not so much better to justify the astronomical cost. I really don’t see how the whole business model US companies developing proprietary models have can survive even in the near term, let alone the long run.
