I’ve mostly abstained from criticising the writing this season because I wanted to see where it would go, and a lot of stuff I chalked up to budget constrains, but they really spent 80%+ of the season on the Supe Virus and V1 plotline all for it to go nowhere other than a slight nod to an upcoming spinoff? surely they could have had a ‘Clara would have wanted it’ moment without wasting all that time? I guess they felt the first Seth Rogen cameo in the season 2 wasn’t long enough and needed to fit in an other

In addition to Gen V being robbed of any impact on the greater story, having Annie give them two instead one one ‘don’t be heroes save yourselves’ speeches don’t make up for that

While I thought the Starlight vs Deep fight was ok(if not a few seasons too late, and can definitely understand her fans being pissed she’s been portrayed as pretty lame power-wise even after gaining more control over her powers and not even contributing to the Homelander fight), but I was confused by something; the sea animals that killed him were saying ‘Justice for Ambrosius’ his Octopus gf he’d killed a season or two before but how did the rest of the sea life find out about her death?

And if he was killed because of the oil spill black noir II caused, how did they find out he was indirectly responsible? a single scene explaining the death of a character that’s been with us since e1 doesn’t seem like much too ask if it could have been a conversation, other than the one oil soaked fish saying ‘We know’ know what? ‘you caused this fish holocaust’ or 'we know you killed Ambrosius but are just now telling you coincidentally while this oil spill we know you didn’t (directly)cause is happening

And I have to agree with the little bit of other reaction what I’ve seen from my cursory glances at the reaction so far: it was complete bullshit we never so Homelander go full psycho tearing apart crowds of ‘unbelievers’ or nuking cities from orbit with his laser(as explicitly implied in some promo material) and literally the largest instance of supe caused destruction in the show being BNII destroying the pipeline and it happening offscreen!

Well even if the rest of the aftermath(like buildings were getting destroyed left and right in earlier seasons and the all we got from the tip-e-top climax was a slightly un-ovaled office) was lacklustre, at least de-powered Homelander breaking down and telling butcher he’d suck his dick and eat his shit was satisfying but it was carried by Anthony Stars’s acting, like 50+% of the show

Not as bad a fumble as GoT tho

edit: I also like Oh Father’s death

Totally agree, acting was peak, some scenes went down well, there was quality here and there but the real issue was the expectations. Because I watched it with little expectation, basically expecting nothing of substance and in a generally good mood, it didn’t bother me too much.

I was pleasantly surprised at some parts and even cried a little, last episode had me feeling nothing for Frenchie dying, so that caught me off guard. They should have wasted less time and devloped the main plot properly, gave us some ‘scorched earth’. If they did that and ended it in a similar manner to this, I can’t see there being anywhere near this much complaint.

It’s like they wrote this ending episode to subvert expectations a little, after all you don’t want your ending to be easy to predict, but then had no idea what to do with how to get there in a satisfying way that clears up every unfinished plot point and just wrote a bunch of filler; Filler that was good to watch but was out of place in a show a few episodes from it’s ultimate climax.

last episode had me feeling nothing for Frenchie dying

Same, I read but haven’t confirmed that there’s a longer version of his death scene where after homelander gut pokes him he spends his last moments of life to shut down the radiation thing to save the non-supe boys, which seems like it would have been more impactful

It’s like they wrote this ending episode to subvert expectations a little

If they wanted to subvert expectations they should have let homelander graphically eat butcher’s shit, then he gets crowbarred

The ending was a lot better than I expected and I actually quite enjoyed watching it overall*, they really fucked up the build up though (and a lot of the plotlines, and the reasoning for why the characters make their choices, and the pacing, and the Gen V characters, and the inconsistencies of the supes powers, and a lot of it was rushed, and supes and neoliberal capitalism just gets to carry on as usual, and Homelander never went on a rampage).

edit: *In retrospect I realise, I am actually pretty unhappy with what we got compared to what we should’ve had.

Homelander never went on a rampage

      This poster

Was a huge bait a switch, wtaf is that crater??? Homie seriously never even lasered a crowd like he did in his in imagination in S2

Even minor supes were practically destroying building in the earlier seasons now the biggest bit of destruction happens of screen and the worst aftermath we see is an oily fish…

We expected the apocalypse and all they gave us was a brawl in the oval office. I’m not American, so it’s like oh wow that room another country’s leader sits in is getting really destroyed oh dear…

Imagine God of War: Ragnarok is mostly the characters wandering around doing side missions and then ending with no ragnarok at all & Kratos walks up to Asgard like, “Odin, it is time we end this, I have brought my secret weapon that now renders you no longer unkillable”. Odin dies, we get a little epilogue and the credits roll.

edit: the more I think about it, the more I dislike this ending

    • In retrospect I realise, I am actually pretty unhappy with what we got compared to what we should’ve had

We didn’t even get an explanation for why they call him Mother’s Milk that actually makes fucking sense

I haven’t read the comics but i’ve read a lot of spoilers and i know there’s things i wouldn’t have liked about it but I also think The Boys having super powers would have been way more interesting instead of all this fucking nonsense they gave us

I thought it was “fine” not even REMOTELY comparable to the trainwreck that the GoT Final was imho. I will say the earlier 1-3 seasons felt stronger and the GEN-V tie in didnt really add anything to the final season.

Most plotlines were concluded in some way and Homelander got what he deserved.

I enjoyed it overall even if I wouldnt call it exaclty “good” im happy its over.

Honestly it was a bit better (and by ‘a bit better’ I mean that it was legally a television ending with a beginning, middle, and end) than I was expecting/hoping for as someone who loves seeing people lose their shit whenever their beloved TV show completely fucks the ending but I can’t get over the whole Soldier Boy power plot ass-pull in the penultimate episode lol.

Random intern: “So, should we have Soldier Boy get thawed out somehow and get revenge on his weirdo chud son for preventing him from leaving after Soldier Boy gave him immortality willingly?”

Eric Kripke: trump-who-must-go What? No. We’re gonna make Kimiko see Frenchie’s spirit and that’ll give her the power to do it. And also she’ll get the ability in the first place from a last minute rug-pull in the 7th episode.

Intern: “Okay…but we’re gonna start the episode with Homelander just going ballistic, right? Last we saw him, he was really pissed about Sage and killed Frenchie after not being able to locate her. I’m thinking we open the episode with his God announcement and then he snaps and just goes ballistic as soon as he realizes everyone is terrified of him, not reverent. Or maybe we can just open the episode with Terror’s death since in the comic, Homelander does kill him and that’s what really makes Butcher go full genocide on supes”

Eric Kripke: Let me stop you right there again kid…

Yeah, Soldier Boy is basically getting his own spinoff so they didn’t even bother utilising his character well at all for these last few episodes.

Honestly it was a bit better (and by ‘a bit better’ I mean that it was legally a television ending with a beginning, middle, and end) than I was expecting

‘Pleasantly surprised’, is what I have seen a lot of people state they were, and I that is accurate to how I was for sure while watching, it does not make up for how poorly the rest of the season was however and it also does not change the fact that there was false advertising, low stakes / no apocalypse, half-arsed character arcs, many contradictions like Homelander going to space and back in a few seconds but not being able to outpace and beat Kimiko, Ryan and Butcher when he is literally upgraded with V1?!

I think Kripke has probably now killed his career - at least to some severity - just like the guy on the toilet the Deep killed with an eel. Wait, was he doing a meta thing there? Like, “Haha I suck at writing and I’m going to end up doing some shitty theatre stuff after this” ? Bravo Kripke, bravo 👏👏

I wouldn’t even give it a ‘pleasantly surprised’ tbh, it genuinely was bad and I think anyone who doesn’t have a very strong attachment to the show in general would agree.

many contradictions like Homelander going to space and back in a few seconds but not being able to outpace and beat Kimiko, Ryan and Butcher when he is literally upgraded with V1?!

Yeah I love that stuff. I’ll give you a better example. They highlighted Homelander’s sense of hearing multiple times this season (and throughout the show) - he can hear people’s heartbeats and, as Frenchie showed in S05E07, he can hear the tap of a finger on a metal door from across a giant abandoned school (which still baffles me, like wym you set up a fucking uranium reactor there make it make sense Eric), but he of course doesn’t hear Starlight crash through the side of the White House with The Deep in tow?? He doesn’t hear O Father’s confrontation with them? Which yeah sure you can wave away with ‘he figured they’d be able to handle it’ but it is also very funny that the show is written so badly that you have to ignore things established in S1/2 otherwise you’ll just have a Bad Time every episode. Very funny to do it though for the Nth time in the series finale.

Starlight’s won 2 fights in 5 seasons and 1 was against Dogknott and the other was mainly her probably using her powers at actual normal speed for once and blasting The Deep away to get actually defeated by the octopus. Can’t believe at no point the show refused to change this despite being willing to do so with so much comic-adjacent stuff. If I were Starlight I would literally just be doing light Spirit Guns everywhere you can’t be serious with the charging up, palms out, doing nothing constantly when you’re surrounded BY THE SUN and your power is LIGHT you should always be ready to pop-off

Awful show. I mean, slop is slop so in the end and I went into S1 7 years ago having read the comic and concluding that it was also slop, so its neither here nor there in my eyes but man put me in front of the Amazon Prime Video board of directors and I could probably get them to greenlight 5 seasons of me sitting in a chair and pressing play on a recording of some sex shop where they have gloryholes like its found footage.

  • My policy of not watching superhero stuff keeps winning. I have no idea what’s going on but a lot of people seem really disappointed.

Idk, maybe we need a communal fanfic project that has Communist superheros in order to not keep having disappointing nonsensical plot swerves. I feel like the superhero thing is inherently not very egalitarian, but we could have a vanguard party of superheros perhaps
