When I saw the nyaraVT highlights featuring the IRL bioinformaticist Vtuber Doc Vivi Leandra, I found those presentations about how trans women are BIOLOGICALLY WOMEN, with accurate information, very positive. I really appreciate the presentations.

Not only I learned from the presentations, Doc Vivi’s style made me solidify my science over religion stance.

Also, she makes a pretty lot of work based on formulation of fictional fauna.

PS: I am not discussing about Subnautica 2 here, to avoid spoilers.

  • Seems like a reasonable introduction.

    spoiler

For a mention of a few of the topics covered in it in-case anyone is trying to decide if they want to watch: They talk about what’s on the Y chromosome & the SRY gene, they talk about things like XYY and SRY transpositions to the X chromosome, androgen insensitivity syndrome, they talk a bit about how genes and proteins interact, and how sex differentiation occurs at a basic level and why that means that trans people are changing their sex when undergoing HRT, vague references to brain differences in men and women (enbys are mentioned and not just dismissed), and a mention of body mapping/phantom limbs.

If you know what I’m referring to with all of that, then you probably wouldn’t get much out of the presentation. Its seems intended to be a introduction for an audience without a strong background in biology and doesn’t go in-depth into any specific topics given its only 40 minutes.

Nitpicking about the format, rather than talking about the content.

The format of that talk seemed poorly coordinated. I only watched the shorter video (Yes, Trans Women Are Biological Females (ft. @DocViviLeandra), not the full 2-hour vid, but you could tell Vivi wasn’t used to trying to do a collab stream + scientific talk combo. My first thought was she was trying to do a traditional style scientific talk where usually all questions are saved for the very end, so there was a mismatch of expectation between the two, but then Vivi would also seemly answer chat questions and ignore Nyara (presumably not intentionally; a long latency + ADHD would explain it)? Also, surely Vivi could have controlled the slides and just shared her screen instead? Maybe technically issues happened and this was the compromise; its certainly not unheard of with in-person scientific talks for the presenter to not have a clicker to advance the slides themselves and have to ask someone else for the next slide. This isn’t a complaint about either person; vtuber collab stream scientific talks are not exactly a common presentation format unfortunately.

Robert Sapolsky’s class lectures have a small snippet about the neurobiology of transgender people if someone wants more details on that (6 minutes and 42 seconds): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QScpDGqwsQ
