For what it’s worth, these 300 million Christians do not exist. It’s estimated that there may be 300 million in 10 years, if for some reason Christianity grows as much as it has in the past decade (there are currently 44 million Christians in china, although for some reason the article claims there are 97 million)
Anyway, in the article some guy claims that the CCP may have to share power with the church if it becomes more influential.
And then the rest of the article is 50% ads, 50% scaremongering about covid and Xinjiang and hong Kong and the Chinese military
So yeah it’s hot garbage
Good news, China has official Christian denominations: the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Church , the Protestant 3-Self Church , and the China Christian Council (vaguely Protestant Christian education/zine publisher).
The Catholic Church was historically pissy about the CPCC and refused to recognize any Bishops in the CPCC (because China doesn’t let the Vatican have any say in the CPCC). The Vatican now “approves” every priest/bishop in the CPCC an individual basis but as far as I know like 99% of them are approved anyway.
Anywho, all this to say that Evangelicals hate the idea of the state monitoring their services for radicalism, so they go underground. The Chinese government actually doesn’t care about underground churches as long as they’re chill and keep numbers below like 300. After that, they get broken up so that they don’t plan any anti-China acts (which they 100% are doing) and to keep their foreign influences to a minimum–these are almost entirely funded by American Evangelicals. :amerikkka-clap:
the vatican and a secular authority arguing over bishop appointments
fuedalism intensifies
Vatican secretly happy because it’s just like old times.
