The local government has every right to make a claim on these spaces to be allocated to the public good, but if you pursue this you get called a tankie.
Capitalists are so insane.
The parking lot is making money by allowing customers to visit your store.
Holy fuck the kind of people I used to work for would go for this too. Absolutely 0 understanding that just because an asset doesn’t have a revenue figure on paper, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a value. It just means you’re not accounting for it yet or can’t account for it numerically.
If you put out a survey that says “if we didn’t have parking, would you still visit this store” and use that headcount against total purchases and divide your overall revenue by that, you’d be able to get AT LEAST an approximate value.
But, then again, figuring out a 4th grade word problem is probably too much for PMC bozos.
Brick-and-mortar business owner trying to figure out how to stick around in a world of convenient delivery: “How do I make it more costly and obnoxious to visit my store?”
my abandoned Quiznos parking lot incoporated as an Event Management and Consultancy LLC that now subcontracts through several nearby vacant lots collecting service and vendor fees from drug dealers, ATMs with credit card skimmers, and escorts giving groin massages in parked vehicles. these fees are deposited offshore in a Panamanian holding corporation.
it’s called being an entrepreneur rise and grind hustle king. if the asphalt defaults, it’s your fault.

Parking shouldn’t be free. Free parking and the expectation thereof has led to all sorts of disastrous land use decisions.
You’re right. It should be more profitable to rent out the 15 parking spots than the apartment block, let alone a single-family home.
Putting the cart before the horse to charge money on parking without providing viable alternatives first. It’s just a tax on working people and a make-work jobs program for tow companies (some of the most evil scum in existence) otherwise
Any public policy that tries to punish people into compliance instead of incentivizing and subsidizing them into compliance is going to end up being used as a cudgel by the state. Since we live in a bourgeois dictatorship, that’s uhh… not good.
Create free public transport that is well run, clean, operated well, convenient to use and the problem will solve itself without any harassing of poor people or holding their cars (and therefore livelihoods) hostage.
You can’t run good convenient transit in places that look like this because parking lots and road widths space destinations out so far.
So seize the land and parking lots from the businesses using eminent domain. That’s different than charging parking fees and towing randos
Oh I didn’t realize we were talking about after the revolution.
The country as it exists currently, has eminent domain power and uses them sometimes. It used them a whole shitload during the industrial revolution and highway projects. Before or after the revolution the solution is direct state power to create good public transport. The whole “tax parking” thing is Liberalism, it’s turning dials on the technocrat Liberal board-of-dials
No one prior to the revolution is going to expropriate surface parking to build dense social housing. And even if they did, it’s still a chicken and egg problem.
You can’t make transit work without the density. You can’t make the density work without the transit.
Your goals are not achievable without some pain for drivers, I’m sorry.
I don’t see what relation putting parking fees has on creating density. You have to create the infrastructure for density to work, that is wholely a completely different thing than randomly applying taxes on individual parking spots, which has basically no relation. At a certain point a big planner has to just fucking do it, that has nothing to do with piddly taxes on randos that just make their lives harder for no reason.
It’s like if a Liberal comes up to you and says they want to fix homelessness, so they are applying excise taxes to all shopping carts. It just doesn’t make any sense and no matter how you crank that dial it’s completely disconnected from effective policy and planning. You think there’s some market logic to what you are doing but it’s just incoherent Liberal punitive regressive taxes that don’t solve anything.
Just simply limit the parking spots and make the infrastructure. Why do you have to bludgeon poor people while you do it?
Exactly. Either charge for parking as % of either net worth or liquid income, or just skip the “parking” designation and raise taxes.
$20 for parking daily can mean someone’s groceries for the month. Might as well take it from the havers and invest into those less off.
Yes, it’s an extremely regressive flat tax.
Deal but only in a walkable city where nearly nobody would bother driving because of all the public transportation
In principle you’re not wrong but If I have the choice to shop somewhere with free parking vs someplace where I have to pay to park, then I’m going to shop at the place with free parking.
This also assumes that everyone parking there is a customer. No service tech is going to pay to park at your site to perform work there. This is already an issue in areas with limited or timed parking. Nothing worse than asking a customer where the best place to park the service van is and only getting a shrug in response.
I hate to have to tell you this (and I know it will come as a shock to a communist), but in order for humans to survive on this planet, we are going to have to reconfigure society somewhat.
Ya, but until then I’m going to need free parking. Fuck if I’m going to be forced to drive a car because of where I live and then also be forced to pay for parking on top of payments, maintenance, gas, and insurance. It’s just another form of landlord passive income for those fucks, too.
Alright I’ll let the guys building the big communism button know that it also has to instantly turn all the parking lots into dense social housing when it gets pressed.
Thank you 😌
The oxygen that customers breathe when they come into the store is making $0. It doesn’t have to.

Mr. Krabs approach to capitalism.
Truck drivers have been screwed by this crap for the past few years already. “Truck Parking Club” has amassed a collection of 4-5,000 locations in that short time — many are places where truckers used to be able to park for free. They did it by promising the bulk of the “membership” fees to the lot owners while they skim off the top for doing almost nothing but being a middleman.
Truckers already get screwed in so many other ways between only being paid by the mile (instead of time on the job, so sitting in traffic costs them), not getting paid for all the miles they drive, having to work near 80 hour weeks every week (70 legal, but there’s always stuff like paperwork that they do off the clock so they can preserve the legal hours for actual money-making - the fed likely knows this which is why they chose a limit of 70 instead of 80), their companies/brokers screwing them, etc., and now this crap.
I’m so tired of capitalism.
Yes, the parking lot could be replaced with something actually useful instead. Another business, some housing, a transit stop, maybe even all of the above for a big enough parking lot.
Airbnb for parking lots lol

it doesn’t cost 0 grains to have a tow company enforce that though, does it?
This is just UK parking except the lot isnt owned by the business its owned by some parking lot shadow corp
It will be subscription based soon.
