A Reuters analysis found the image of the map included in the presentation contained an artificial intelligence watermark that it was made with OpenAI tools

Seriously, given who’s in charge and who he surrounds him with, assume his cabinet does the same, and idiocy and incompetence propagates down.

However low your expectations would be, lower them further, and then keep lowering them.

I will congratulate them for getting the continent shape right. They probably don’t know where it is in the world…

Its pretty lazy, but also, this should be something that AI can do. The fact that its SO wrong is telling of how useless AI models are for things like this.

Yeah, but that’s the thing, the experts (GIS people and cartographers in general) would immediately tell you that AI can’t make accurate maps. As someone who makes maps as a chunk of my job, I’m not at all surprised.

Which, like you said, is telling about LLMs in general, but it should also remind all of us that for the most part, people get paid for their job because they have cultivated their skills over the course of their career.

I can make a really good data-driven map from scratch in minutes. That’s a skill I have devoted years to, and I get paid because my employer likes the quality of the maps I make and how fast I can make them.

It’s exhausting to see people try to take my job by generating the shittiest potato-quality crap, and thinking it’s acceptable.

For clarification, I’m not trying to discount the necessary and valuable job you do. AI should never be used in international communications. And it should never replace human knowledge and skill. What I was trying to highlight is that even for illustrative purposes where scale and <1km resolution aren’t important, AI failed to fetch a public domain map thats current and highlight the countries discussed. Something you could do in seconds and pass to someone to create the overlay or do yourself.

For sure, I took no offense, and I can totally understand how anyone might assume that AI would be good at producing a map, so, until it’s possible I feel like I have to keep showing my job’s still relevant! Pretty fucked up actually.

Yeah but if you know a little bit of how LLM works under the hood it’s not surprising they’re bad at making a map of the planet.

Also why the fuck would we need to use AI to generate a map, fine use AI for some overlays or something but how lazy and incompetent are the folks inside the Trump admin. Lordy.

Yeah I looked at it and it’s like they did find a map and then just told an AI to paint x countries x colors (whatever shitty prompt they used).

Because they’re too stupid or incompetent to know which countries are where and they think they can offload their brain to a LLM.

I guess this is what we deserve. I’d be laughing if it wasn’t real life.

You don’t need a watermark to spot a PowerPoint botched by AI. For me, it was the missing connection between I think it was the Cote d’Ivoir and the list on the right. AI is so bad with PowerPoint, you will have stupid mistakes and discrepancies on each end every page. Worse than any bored unpaid intern would do.

So Elon Musk planned to use mass DOGE firings to remove expert employees who did good work and replace them with his x AI and effectively funnel their paychecks to himself, with kickbacks to whomever helped him execute his plan. The US government appointed leadership has pushed for maximum AI use and at the end of the day the AI can’t even make a half accurate map of major continent, something the lowest level state dept employee could do in 2 minutes on the back of a napkin.

Just to be clear, there’s only six countries labeled on the map, and all six have the wrong name. They didn’t mislabel every country on the entire continent.

it’s because they used the wrong model.
an LLM would have been able to accurately provide this information. Instead they asked an Image model which wouldn’t be able to do it. different training data. It’s why you find many image models can’t spell. so the blame shouldn’t really be placed on the AI being stupid, should be placed on the lazy fucking intern for being stupid. bro was trying to use a hammer to tighten a nut.

getting downvoted for explaining exactly how this happened…ok lemmy/piefed I know you all hate AI, so do I, but god damn folks chill out.
