If they killed your father, then they’re probably going to kill someone else’s loved ones.
So killing them is saving lives.
That’s highly speculative, maybe your father killed their father, and you are simply perpetuating the cycle by becoming a killer yourself.
Edit: I went to look up how often murderers kill again, and at least on datapoint is this US conference proceeding stating that among almost 57 thousand cases studied only 0.82% went on to kill again.
That’s why you gotta get 'em while they’re still young. Close the circle.
root and stem
And now you know why: prevention.
Tell that to Batman, I wouldn’t mind seeing Gotham after a year of killing all the big bad guys.
Gotham is literally cursed. Nothing a Wayne does could ever fix it.
It’s one of those cases where “Status Quo is God”. Gotham’s curse is just DC throwing up its hands and giving itself an out that its readers will have to accept if they want to keep reading Batman.
That’s gotta be a green Mario quote
Once you realize the antirevenge narratives are being pushed by the epstein class, there’s no going back.
Yeah I’m reminded of that meme that’s like
“You shouldn’t kill dragons. It’s not right”
“Did a dragon tell you that?”
The Epstein class wishes that they were dragons. They’re not even a fraction as cool.
A couple weeks before they shot that scene, Mandy had lost his father to cancer. He channeled all that grief into the final scene.
So that’s why it was so emotional…
Well played.
“I want my father back you son of a bitch” 😭
Honestly I wish I had an emotionally supportive dad so that I could fully understand this sentiment, but as things are I can only appreciate it from an artistic perspective.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful he’s still around. He’s grown up in a lot of ways, but in many ways he’s still the same and I’ve had to just learn to accept that he’ll never be the father figure I always needed…
I agree with this. Mine entered hospice without even telling me; I found out he died from his friends.
You just have to work with what you’re given, and do a better job for your own children.
Bold of you to assume I’ll have children.
Sorry for your loss though
Mandy
In my head canon, Mandy Patinkin’s first name is short for “Mandrew”.
I know it’s not the case, but don’t care because the thought makes me lol
Also, (correct me if I’m wrong it’s been a while) as far as revenge arcs go he was rather chill about it. He didn’t spend every waking moment building a giant board and investigating every angle. He picked a job that introduced him to a lot of people high and low and just looked for people with six fingers.
Like… I’ve seen less healthy coping mechanisms all things considered…
He devoted himself to becoming the best swordsman in the world and spent years chasing the six-fingered man. But he found nothing and became a depressed alcoholic. The years of anticipation crashed down on him like a pile of bricks. Vizzini gave him a job and sobered him up
Is that how it went? Now I’m getting reasons to watch the princess bride again.
Not that I’m complaining.
Read the book!
It’s not a kissing story, right?
Just another reason why The Princess Bride is one of THE best movies ever made. Love me a realistic revenge arc.
An eye for an eye and the world goes blind
It’s “leaves the whole world blind”, but that notably doesnt apply to murderers, dictators, and other objectively bad people.
So you’re pro death penalty then?
Im anti death penalty almost exclusively because its cheaper for tax payers to keep a prisoner for life than it is to kill them. I also dont trust the state to dish out punishments with our fucked legal system.
I do believe, for example, the super hero “i never kill” trope is incredibly misguided and pretty much objectively stupid, especially in the case of Batman, but thats my rampant (formally diagnosed) autism
I concur.
That last bit frustrates me to no end in various media. It’s part of why I hate Marvel films. You have these people already dishing out vigilante justice but killing the mass murderer/genocidal maniac is “lowering oneself to their level?” I’m sorry but at that point it’s your duty, lest you’re complicit in their next genocide.
Ugh.
i’ve been reading a webnovel called “Path of the deathless” and it’s very gratifying to have the protagonist go “no i don’t care that ‘you’re the only person who can run this empire’, you obviously need to die lmao, you’re a remorseless slaver and your empire is built on suffering. Now, please take a step to the side so i can pulp you without hurting the innocent people, thank you!”
That does sound very gratifying.
Batman is brutal, and IRL most of his victims would end up with varying amounts of brain damage.
Many of them would die, really, some in the spot even. A single punch in the face is enough to kill.
i think that’s part of the point with batman. at the end of the day hes a damaged dude obsessed with his own moral code no matter what damage it causes to everything around him
I get what you mean, although there’s no such thing as objectively bad people. What is bad depends on culture.
so if someone kills 10’000 people that’s… maybe fine depending on your culture?
I can name a few dozen that make their way through the news cycle with war crimes and crimes against humanity weekly.
Even if i was less woke, its pretty obvious that stealing millions of dollars just to hoard it is objectively bad
I used to think this was true; that evil was always contextual.
Now I see there are absolutely people who are ontologically evil.
Yeah, when someone pokes out your eye, instead of poking out their eye you should just let that person poke your other eye out. Because that way at least you won’t both be blind! See?
/S
Yes, but murdering master swordsmiths to ensure no one ever has a better sword than you just makes vengeful sons of swordsmiths.
Surely being launched 8 feet into the air while unconscious is enough to kill a guy. At best, they’re so disabled they might as well be dead
I guess I’ve missed out on the anti revenge narratives. I feel like most series and movies these days are revenge narratives. Not my cup of tea personally, but I understand why they are popular.
The Last of Us 2 was a big one that pissed people off.
Those people are stupid or lying.
It’s an awful story.
