Makes me think of the thought experiment that my middle school art teacher laid on us.

What if the blue that I see is not the blue that you see? Like what if what I call red is what your eyes see as blue?

Thinking back, she was hella toasted the whole time she was teaching us.

It’s a valid question. From what I remember, experiments show that we probably do all experience colors the same way. But, there’s no way to be absolutely sure.

I believe this has been answered: No. You blue isn’t my blue.

Also, some colors like magenta, brown, and mauve are artificial constructs. And then there are the “purely synthetic” colors like olo (aka, hella green).

I wonder if a person who never learned the words for colours would experience it differently. Or if they would be able to discern between them at all

There’s a tribe in Namibia that has no distinction between green and blue.

          Article here.

Studies on the Himba of Namibia illustrate this phenomenon: their language does not distinguish blue from green in the way Western languages do. Yet, they perceive subtle variations of green that most Westerners struggle to differentiate. This variability in perception suggests that language acts as a filter, shaping what we are capable of seeing.

Where I am, I’m starting to wonder if I’ll ever see a blue sky again. Even when there are no clouds, it’s usually pretty gray. I’m thinking the cause is probably wildfire smoke. I’m lucky never to have faced any real risk of loss of life or property to flames themselves and don’t expect that to be a real possibility for me ever in the foreseeable future. But it’s sad to see the sky so gray. Maybe after wildfire season ends, it will be bluer again at least for part of the year.

Careful. Stare too deeply into the blue and the blue stares into you.

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of “discuss” rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

  • what is this thing?
  • No Stupid Questions

  • Mildly Interesting

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with “So” - starting a post with pointless phrases, like “I hope this is allowed” or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.
