Righto, I’ve spent several hours searching on the subject and the unequivocal answer is it pre-dates Billy Butcher saying it on The Boys by at least a decade, but probably considerably more than that:

The Boys quote is 2024 (to my surprise I thought it was earlier than that) - It occurs in The Boys season 4, in the episode “Beware the Jabberwock, My Son”, broadcast 2024. The wording is “I’d call you a cunt, but you ain’t got the depth or the warmth”, spoken to Annie January (Starlight).

It is unclear with whom the phrase orginated as it seems to be an alteration of an earlier common phrasing.

In 2018 Eddie Vedder refers to Trump in the same manner in a concert in London

And in 2010 a student (hydrochloricacd) at Boston University reports it as having been said to her in her LiveJournal blog.

So…that’s as far back as I could find evidence for that exact phrase BUT there’s an identically constructed phrase from the British Army dating back to 1914 where the lack is “usefulness” rather than warmth and depth, but still keeps the same phrasing of “you’re not a cunt, a cunt [has positive attributes]”

I’m very sure that it pre-dates “The Boys” by several decades as I am positive I’ve heard it before, at least as early as the 2000s. I can recall an incidence of a much younger me thinking I was very clever repeating it (spoiler I wasnt nearly as clever as I thought I was).

My vague memory is it came from British or Australian comedians (Derek & Clive, Kevin bloody Wilson sprang to mind)

I can’t however find any attribution for it in a search other than the Billy Butcher quote. So I’m afraid that is an unreliable anecdote.

Well Minnie Driver used it as the reason Samantha Bee shouldn’t have called Ivanka a “feckless cunt” when she told her “He listens to you. Put on something low-cut and tell him it’s an Obama move” back in 2018 (The Boys starts in 2019) but even then she said she was paraphrasing the French, because supposedly it’s an older classic French diplomatic insult.

Edit to add: I tried putting it in French, and switching the order of depth and warmth, and trying the feminine, and Google French AI insists it’s “often attributed to Dorothy Parker,” and added “ni la charme” but then gave no examples of her saying it, and she’s also known to have quoted older insults and made them her own. But interestingly it gave several references to Romans 8:28 (or thereabouts, depending on translation) which would be familiar enough to historical people to add another element to the insult. As if I were to say, “Ain’t no mountain high enough to keep him from a cheeseburger.”

I thought it was Churchill , but I might be thinking of a different quote
