Press Statement by Spokesman for DPRK Ministry of National Defence

Pyongyang, December 2 (KCNA) – A spokesman for the Ministry of National Defence of the DPRK released the following press statement “Any attack on space asset of the DPRK will be deemed declaration of war against it” on Saturday:

The brigandish nature of the U.S., which regards it as its main lever for realizing its hegemonic wild ambition to commit outrageous and unlawful military intervention against sovereign countries, has been brought to light more clearly, occasioned by the DPRK’s reconnaissance satellite launch.

An official concerned of the U.S. Space Command recently spouted rubbish hinting at a military attack on the DPRK’s reconnaissance satellite, saying that the U.S. can decrease the enemy country’s outer space operation capabilities by employing diverse “reversible and irreversible methods”.

American military affairs experts comment that the U.S. Space Force can physically destroy not only opponent’s satellite and satellite earth station but also get rid of enemy state’s space force through jamming and virus-using cyber attack.

The U.S. Space Force’s deplorable hostility toward the DPRK’s reconnaissance satellite can never be overlooked as it is just a challenge to the sovereignty of the DPRK, and more exactly, a declaration war against it.

Article 8 of the “Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies”, the main international outer space treaty, stipulates that any object launched into outer space definitely falls under the jurisdiction of the launcher state and the ownership of it never changes no matter it remains in outer space or returned to the earth.

This means that the reconnaissance satellite “Malligyong-1” is a part of the territory of the DPRK where its sovereignty is exercised.

Furthermore, reconnaissance satellite is not regarded as a space weapon by international law for its technical features aimed at observation.

If the reconnaissance satellite of the DPRK is regarded by the U.S. as a “military threat” that must be gotten rid of, countless spy satellites of the U.S. flying above the Korean peninsula region every day, exclusively tasked with monitoring the major strategic spots of the DPRK, should be deemed the primary targets to be destroyed by the armed forces of the DPRK.

By openly unveiling its aggression scheme to mount a military attack on a space asset of other sovereign country, a part of its properties and territory, the U.S. has proved itself its true colors as the chief culprit of evils seeking to realize its wild ambition for dominating the world by turning outer space, common wealth of humankind, into a theater of war.

It is the mission of the armed forces of the DPRK, specified by its constitution and other laws, to exercise their war deterrent to protect the state sovereignty and territorial integrity in case a lethal military attack is carried out against the country’s strategic assets or it is judged that such attack is imminent.

In case the U.S. tries to violate the legitimate territory of a sovereign state by weaponizing the latest technologies illegally and unjustly, the DPRK will consider taking responsive action measures for self-defence to undermine or destroy the viability of the U.S. spy satellites by exercising its legitimate rights vested by international and domestic laws. -0-

I love the English in DPRK press releases, the mix of extremely good vocabulary and broken sentence structure is unironically great.

Uncritical support to the DPRK in their struggle against illegal occupation and imperialism

KCNA is the news agency of the DPRK government. DPRK successfully launched their reconnaissance satellite into orbit on November 21. The purpose of the reconnaissance satellite is to take photos of countries who threaten the DPRK, for the defensive purposes of the DPRK. KCNA has published 2-3 articles now which listed various locations that the satellite has photographed including several US military bases, the White House, the Pentagon, several locations in South Korea. These photo have not been made public.

The United States, who is the antagonizer as always, who provokes the DPRK by doing military drills which threaten the DPRK, has condemned DPRK satellite launch and continues to increase tensions. The US has confirmed that the satellite is in orbit. The KCNA article mentions that a US official threatened to destroy the DPRK satellite. This KCNA article is a warning to the US for making threats to destroy the DPRK satellite.

I’ve read KCNA occasionally for the past couple years. I have been reading it more closely for the past 2-3 months. KCNA has been posting a lot of interesting articles about the US escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula region. KCNA has also published articles criticizing the US’s meddling in other regions, like the Middle East, Palestine. I also like the writing style of the articles.

The reason that I posted this article in particular was that the article is a direct warning to the US. I think it’s cool that the DPRK is challenging the US’s global hegemony.

    reuters article from south korea

North Korea says interference in its satellites would be declaration of war

    December 1, 2023 10:07 PM EST

SEOUL, Dec 2 (Reuters) - North Korea said on Saturday it would consider any interference with its satellite operations a declaration of war and would mobilise its war deterrence if any attack against its strategic assets were imminent.

Pyongyang would respond to any U.S. interference in space by eliminating the viability of U.S. spy satellites, state media KCNA reported, citing a statement from North Korea’s defence ministry spokesperson.

“In case the U.S. tries to violate the legitimate territory of a sovereign state by weaponizing the latest technologies illegally and unjustly, the DPRK will consider taking responsive action measures for self-defence to undermine or destroy the viability of the U.S. spy satellites,” the statement said.

DPRK are the initials of the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

North Korea says it successfully launched its first military spy satellite on Nov. 21, transmitting photos of military installations in the U.S. mainland, Japan and the U.S. territory of Guam.

A U.S. Space Command spokesman, asked if Washington had the capability to interrupt the North Korean satellite’s reconnaissance operations, said the U.S. was could deny an adversary’s space capabilities using a variety of means, according to U.S. broadcaster RFA.

The United States on Thursday targeted North Korea with fresh sanctions after the launch, designating foreign-based agents it accused of facilitating sanctions evasion to gather revenue and technology for its weapons of mass destruction programme.

South Korea on Friday blacklisted 11 North Koreans for involvement in the country’s satellite and ballistic missile development, banning them from financial transactions.

I mean, this is fine. Please no one shoot this and create a Kessler effect that will screw space travel for 10k years? (Looks at India)

I mean, it’s more than fine. This is just another example of the USA making wildly antagonistic threats towards the DPRK and the DPRK responding fairly. Reminder that the USA is run by evil genocidal maniacs, and the DPRK is and always has been the “good guys” on the peninsula.

The worst of Kessler syndrome should be over by a century since all the LEO stuff would burn up. I don’t think GEO is crowded enough to worry?

Tru, i was being hyperbolic, tho now it seems more like i went full on into orbit territory.

Also depends on the next couple of decades and how the world handles the warming. Maybe this century is the only one we have enough economic health to pursue space. (So we’d be screwed for quite a while if we miss this window)

“Don’t commit acts of war against us because we will defend ourselves”, spoken to the most belligerent and warlike country in the world (USA) is not a “veiled threat and dribble (sic)”, it’s called a defensive posture and standing up to a bully.

These are some of the military operations that the US and South Korea have jointly conducted to threaten and antagonize the DPRK. This has been ongoing since the 60s. Every time that you see western media claiming that the DPRK is making unprovoked threats, the DPRK is giving defensive warning to ongoing military action against the DPRK, actions conducted by South Korea and the US.

In 2018, Donald Trump temporarily canceled all joint military operations. Probably one of the only good things he ever did but liberals were outraged about this. Donald Trump said, "The war games are very expensive; we paid for a big majority of them, we fly in bombers from Guam,” “That’s a long time for these big massive planes to be flying to South Korea to practice and then drop bombs all over the place and then go back to Guam. I know a lot about airplanes, it’s very expensive.” The war games resumed in later 2018.

Since October 2023, the US has deployed nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, USS Ronald Reagan and USS Carl Vinson, to the Korean Peninsula region, as well as many other warplanes and warships. The DPRK is responding defensively to the dangerous military assets that the US has put in the region.

Your reaction should be that the US should stop being aggressive towards the DPRK. The US should stop doing military operations in the region. The US should stop placing sanctions on the DPRK.

Maybe instead of having a paternalistic and condescending attitude towards and culture and people you barely know you just shut up, maybe take a second to read about the horrors of the Korean war and sanctions against the DPRK
