a couple snippets from the interview. the first snippet is about Tom Morelloa doing some concert to promote voting in the midterms. the second snippet is him saying that he didn’t vote for Kamala because of her complicity in Gaza genocide, he doesn’t use the word genocide.

Is there an argument that people’s focus on Ed Sheeran is indeed a distraction from what they should be focusing on?

Yeah, 100 percent. It’s all right to shame him in this moment because he deserves the shame, but not the focus. The focus is your and my tax dollars are going to commit horrific war crimes in the Middle East, and that, I believe, should be the focus and what we should be doing our best to stop in its tracks.

It’s a clickbait, it’s salacious, it’s, ā€œOh my gosh, poor Ed Sheeran.ā€ First of all, has Ed Sheeran never seen a Macklemore performance before in the last three years? He certainly should’ve known what he was getting into.

The one thing that’s sort of adjacent is, this is a time where speech is being vilified and is a crime, where the truth is a crime, where skin color is a crime, where immigrant status is a crime, where gender is a crime, where sexual orientation is a crime. And it’s my belief that the true crime is the rise of authoritarianism, and the true crime is the erosion of freedoms, and the true crime is an impending environmental disaster. And so my hope at each one of my shows, I deputize the audience as anti-fascist crime fighters, and that’s really the way that I think you have to look at the world right now. Like, what are the real crimes that are happening, and what is it that you and I can do to stop it?

Now that I’ve gotten you fired up — your Power to the People Festival. What is its most essential purpose?

It is not PR or hyperbole to say it is a festival of peace, love, justice, and music. In a time where war is celebrated, this is a festival of peace. In a time where hatred and division are rife, this is a festival of love. In a time where injustice is the norm, this is a festival celebrating fighting for justice. In a time where there’s a lot of shitty music, there’s gonna be a lot of great music on this stage, so we’re going for four for four.

How much were the midterms on your mind when you scheduled this?

As my dear departed mom, Mary Morello, who passed away at 102 years old, was a very political person, said, ā€œYou’ve got to fight the fascists every which way you can.ā€ One of those ways is at the ballot box. It’s not the only way, and you should not just think that because you’ve done that. Voting is a piece on the chessboard, and that you try to create an environment where in between the voting you can fight for a more just, a more peaceful, a more equal world.

And so, is the festival three weeks before the midterms? Yeah. Does the money from the festival go to voting rights organizations? Yeah, it does, but the festival is about something much bigger than that. It’s about what kind of world do you really wanna live in, and should we fight for that world, or should we settle for the one that’s being spoon-fed for us by the oligarchs?

Returning as promised to the electoralism issue — there are some on the left who tend to argue it doesn’t matter, don’t bother voting, both sides are the same. So what would you say to someone on the left who says, ā€œListen, man, I listen to Rage Against the Machine, and I know everyone’s the same. It’s about tearing down the power structure. Doesn’t matter who you vote for. I’m not votingā€?

On the one hand, I think that rebellion is self-care, in a way, but I answered that already. Mary Morello was 100 percent right. You have to stop the fascists every which way you can. First of all, a lot of people who I greatly respect and admire the sacrifice they’ve made to try to get people with my color skin to be able to vote in this country, and have died, been lynched for it, they’ve been shot in the back for it, and it’s very disrespectful to their memory to do that.

But that in and of itself is not going to change the levers of power in a significant way. It’s not. It’s not. You should do it. But it would be like, okay, great, you vote, and on the next day you start working. You start working harder for the world you really want without compromise and without apology. And not just putting in the hands of whatever corporate Democrat you choke down your vote for in that particular election, that it’s your job to make the world the way that you think it could be to help those that are the most in need and to hold those accountable who are most guilty.

Do you feel that people on the left should have voted for Kamala Harris?

I’m crystal clear that people’s conscience cannot allow them to do something that they fundamentally believe is wrong. I was the scheduling secretary for United States Senator Alan Cranston. I saw how the corporate Democrat sausage is made. It is worse than you think. And there is a reason, there is a righteous fury at the corporate controlled, money controlled electoral system we have that is absolutely legitimate, and people cannot choke down — I understand it — voting for a candidate that’s responsible for what happened in Gaza, and they just can’t do it, and I’m not gonna blame them for that.

But I think that putting it on them is the most cowardly thing. Put it on the fucking Democratic Party. First of all, I don’t believe it’s their responsibility and they’re never gonna necessarily never do the right thing, but I think it’s all of our responsibility to co-create the world that we want and not point fingers at people that were just like, ā€œWell, you know, my conscience didn’t allow me to do that, so it’s your fault.ā€ I will not co-sign that.

Did you vote for Kamala?

I certainly did not.

You did not?

Did not. I couldn’t do it.

I didn’t realize that.

V for Vendetta — that one inch of who you are belongs to you, and they can’t have it. Now, I live in a state where it may not have moved the meter, but I just couldn’t do it. Couldn’t do it.

When’s the last time that you didn’t vote for the Democratic candidate?

Can’t remember the last time I did.

Wow, okay. I thought you were softening a little bit.

Can’t remember the last time I did.

No shit? The lady who said there must be a peace-fire… [cheers] … for at least six weeks (or some similar bullshit). And didn’t let any Palestinians speak at her big party. And told other activists to go to another rally for whatever they were saying. She lost? I wonder why.

It’s not difficult to meet your voters where they are if you actually listen to them.

The point in not voting for Kamala is to put pressure on the democrats to stave off the authoritarian apocalypse they are delivering. It’s not just stay at home and do nothing, but make your voice heard. Make sure people know what your demands are, organize with others. The dems are holding Trump as a gun to your heads saying ā€œvote for me or else you’ll get Trumpā€ while bombing and killing in your name. And with your vote secured they keep sliding right, trying to appeal to people like the conservatives that aren’t voting for them. So counterbalance that. Become part of the class of people they have to appeal to, make them earn their vote. You only get one, don’t give it up for free.

You realise you’re doing exactly what conservatives want you to do?

They know it’s not possible to win your vote, so instead just convince you not to vote, and / or criticise your own side.

…it’s not possible to win your vote…

Lets take a look at the requirements to get votes:

                • Be against genocide
                • Be against the bombing of children
                • Make healthcare on par with the rest of the first-world
                • Stop supporting Trump
                • Stop supporting rapists
                • Stop supporting masked thugs, from kidnapping, raping, torturing, stealing, and murdering
                • Stop taking money from the workers, and giving it to the rich

None of that seems impossible at all. It actually seems pretty easy to me. But the Democrats would rather help put Trump in power.

Tom Morello lives in California, where his vote for president doesn’t matter at all, and is literally doing work to promote voting now. It sounds like he’s not going to hold it against anyone if they can’t stomach voting for Democrats with truly abhorrent policies though. It shouldn’t be such a hard bar to pass for them not to push people to that ā€œone last inchā€.

      I sure will.

The time to support the candidate you want is before the primary. In the primary, vote for the least abhorrent option. And then in the general, vote for the least abhorrent option. That’s the only sane way.

So if someone looks at voting and says they won’t vote blue in the general election, they support fascism, like it or not. If they didn’t do anything before that point, well, they fucking should have done.

Many people who don’t vote believe (with some pretty good justification, imo) that it’s all bread and circuses, that ultimately the U.S. government is going to do what it wants regardless of who gets elected. I’m personally with you that it does make a difference, but I don’t think anyone’s done a good job of making a case to the skeptics that things would have been substantially different if Kamala Harris had won (and pointing out how shockingly awful things under Trump are isn’t enough, especially considering how many moderate Democrats have been happy to go along with that awfulness when push comes to shove). How do you convince people they still have a modicum of power in a system that is so clearly designed to make most of us powerless?

I know the popular vote isn’t that important because the US has a fucked up 2-party system.

But it is a metric that is being used to try to get rid of gerrymandering.

So unless you love gerrymandering, better vote so it is clear who is more popular.

Quite well, actually. Kamala or Trump winning would have resulted in the exact same outcome in Gaza. The vast majority of the Gaza deaths were during Biden’s term. Trump’s Gaza policy is ā€œcontinue all of Biden’s policies, but be more performatively cruel about it.ā€

So in terms of the actual impact on Gaza, Trump or Kamala winning made no difference at all.

However, what has changed is that support for Zionism has become politically radioactive among the Democratic party. This was only possible because Kamala’s genocide support cost her the presidency. Her loss delegitimized pro-genocide voices among the Democrats, and the party has moved substantially on the issue.

So again, the actual condition on the ground in Gaza hasn’t changed, but Trump and Kamala had identical Gaza platforms - full support for genocide. At least with Kamala losing, there are some hopeful signs of optimism for the future.

Something isn’t ā€œinsane bullshitā€ just because it goes against your sports team. The cold hard, unavoidable truth is that the vast majority of the deaths and destruction in Gaza occurred on Biden’s watch. Trump just continued Biden’s policies, though admittedly with more performative cruelty.

i find it very amusing that when the two major US parties do the same policy, regardless of which originated it, on the fediverse it’s always ā€œthe democrats did this and republicans continued itā€.

And queer people weren’t exactly safe under Kamala. All she had to say was that we should follow the law. Meanwhile her party was busy persecuting us as well.

No I think Trump has been worse on Gaza than Harris would have been. The cruelty isn’t just performative, it has hurt real people. But between the two of them, Gaza was doomed by the bipartisan consensus no matter what.

I agree that Trump has made pro-Israel stances absolutely toxic on the left. I don’t think that would have happened with Harris in office. But the cost has been incredibly high.

I really see no evidence that Kamala would have been any better. This seems to be a vibes-based argument. Trump has more evil vibes than Kamala, so therefore he has to be materially worse for Gaza. In practice, both sides give a blank check to the Israelis. Kamala would have given a blank check to Netanyahu while giving speeches calling for peace and reconciliation. Trump gave the same blank check while calling Palestinians subhuman animals. The actual material reality is the same. Trump’s just cruder and crueler about it.

Her constituency was EXTREMELY against Israel’s actions to the point of HER LOSING BECAUSE OF IT. That would have made a difference. That same constituency forced a sitting president to give up his run for a 2nd term mere months before an election. Dems have to consider their constituency’s stance on topics more than Republicans do.

And now we have a president (and House and Senate) whose constituency doesn’t give a flying fuck about Palestinians.

Never, ever forget that the reason Biden got cancelled was because of a bad tv performance and not the genocide. I distinctly remember all the blueanon folk screaming about holding ones nose and voting for biden until he looked bad on TV, then the dems told them who to blindly support next and when that (very predictably) failed the people that get blamed for the loss are … the voters that just couldn’t swallow what the dems shat out. It’s time to hold the politicians accountable and not the masses that are doing exactly what the system is supposedly for, affirming or not affirming someone for public office.

Democrats lost the presidency on purpose. Kamala never intended to win, she copied and pasted the Biden’s policy website 1 day before the presidential debate. The purpose of the Kamala campaign was to obstruct any anti-genocide candidate from running. Biden pretended to be able to run to block any Democratic Primary from happening and then Democrats ran Kamala to lose on purpose.

Kamala ran campaign ads that said she would be stricter on the border than Trump would be. Who is saying that Trump isn’t harsh enough on immigrants? Nobody. Republicans don’t believe that and Democrats don’t want that.

Kamala lost every single swing state. The DNC blocked trans people from speaking at the DNC. Tim Walz said that a top priority of his vice presidency would be the expansion of Israel’s territory. Kamala campaigned with Liz Cheney and leaked documents showed that they knew that doing this would hurt Kamala’s polling chances. Kamala sent Bill Clinton to the Dearborn Michigan to tell the Muslim voters that the West Bank and Gaza belong to Israel.

Zionist Democrats are happy that Trump won because he’s doing everything that they want to do and he takes the blame when it upsets the majority of the public. Last year, Chuck Schumer was posting tiktoks begging Trump to start the war with Iran.

How did it turn out? The Zionists in both parties love that Trump won because Zionist Republicans and Zionist Democrats are on the same team, Team Genocidal Settlers.

I’ve been voting for 18 years, since I could vote, been into politics for longer. All I can say is bring up the definition of insanity is what it’s like. You think you’re voting for change.

Yeah I voted for Obama, great he did everything I voted for not to be done. Bombed the shit out of a bunch of countries. Passed a half-ass insurance market that was a only a bit better then getting spit roasted, really just caved in to the insurance companies instead of a UHC/NHS. Didn’t legalize cannabis and not even change the scheduling for it. After eight years, it didn’t seem like much happened. Obama is a very charismatic politician and I voted for him, honestly looking back I kinda think McCain would have been more reasonable since I met him in person and well protested his speech, I’m surprise the security didn’t haul me away. And I write this because Obama did signed off on one of the most atrocious things, and expansion of the Patriot Act. If you thing this whole icy thing is new, no it started with Bush Jr and expanded by Obama.

Biden is the reason why you can’t discharge student loans through bankruptcy. So SLABs became a thing, people investing on your school debt.

Kamala was a perfect example of the shit show the political system is. Last minute changes. A figure that has negative Charisma points. I mean people bring up the whole laughing thing. I get it. We’re all fucked because from covid and you having the time of your life and haha I’m going to be the first female President, didn’t exactly set a good image. Realistically the DNC should have just asked AOC to run and I hope she does in the future. At least it wouldn’t look like a Manchurian candidate.

I didn’t vote for Rump but it didn’t feel like I voted for anything and wasted a day.

          https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/10/8/kamala-harris-says-iran-is-greatest-adversary-of-us

          October 2024:

In an interview with the CBS television network aired on Monday night, the Democratic presidential candidate said Iran is the ā€œobviousā€ answer when asked about the country she considers to be the US’s ā€œgreatest adversaryā€.

ā€œIran has American blood on their hands – this attack on Israel, 200 ballistic missiles,ā€ she said. ā€œWhat we need to do [is] to ensure that Iran never achieves the ability to be a nuclear power. That is one of my highest priorities.ā€

Meanwhile, the Biden administration continued to enforce Trump-era sanctions against Iran and added dozens of its own against Iranian companies and officials.

Harris ā€œunequivocallyā€ denounced the Iranian missile launches. ā€œI am clear-eyed: Iran is a destabilising, dangerous force in the Middle East, and today’s attack on Israel only further demonstrates that fact,ā€ she said on October 1.

The vice president has repeatedly pledged to continue to arm Israel, citing in part what she calls the threat of Iran, despite growing anger over well-documented Israeli abuses in Gaza and Lebanon.

I was the scheduling secretary for United States Senator Alan Cranston.

    Oh well that’d do it.

On November 20, 1991, Cranston was reprimanded by theĀ U.S. Senate Select Committee on EthicsĀ for ā€œimproper conductā€ afterĀ Lincoln SavingsĀ headĀ Charles Keating’s companies contributed $850,000 to voter registration groups closely affiliated with Cranston. Keating had wanted federal regulators to stop ā€œhoundingā€ hisĀ savings and loanĀ association. Although the committee found that ā€œno evidence was presented to the Committee that Senator Cranston ever agreed to help Mr. Keating in return for a contributionā€, the committee deemed Cranston’s misconduct the worst among theĀ Keating Five.

Keep living in a fairytale. You have no cards to play except the ones you are dealt. Deal with it or pull a Luigi, but you aren’t helping anyone with the constant extremes and basically pessimistic no way out attitude while sitting at home ego jerking. Instead of trying to pull this country into an even deeper hole, pull out a dictionary and look up what pragmatism means. It blows that the only valid choice is godawful, legit story of my life. Cry harder about it and watch how much worse things can get if that buffoon keeps his circus going.

Sister, the choice is fire or fire. You keep making the democrats out to be better than they are.
The only one who ought to shut up is you when you say silly shit like this

You have no cards to play except the ones you are dealt.

In relation to voting for democrats. There is so much more one can do. And not voting for genociders is a pretty good start. Actually making demands of Democrats is the very very least one can do, and one does not make demands when they vote blue no matter who.

And this is such a far deroute from the original question which was: Do you think everyone else has to play nice, just because you do?
This idea that pointing out the flaws of a candidate or a party is somehow something one cant do at a given time because… Then people will hear it? People will hear it either way, if you shut your mouth, then theres nothing to be done until its too late - If you buy into this whole spiel of you owing Democrats something, that is.
As I wrote - and you skipped over - in reality the ā€œnow is not the timeā€ line is not something Democrats themselves believe. They frequently fuck over left-wing candidates and movements, no matter what time it is. So since the people saying ā€œnow is not the timeā€ dont believe it, why should I trust that it has any validity?

I feel like this is similar to the mistake we made in 2024. Voters are not going to hold their noses; it’s more important to be vocal about how exactly democrats can win. Call your candidate and inform them!

Fair but tbh, I don’t think any of the old guard that didn’t get primaried are actually listening. Half that party spits on their voters.
