So when beds were held up with rope to support a sack of hay, a newly married couple would come to their honeymoon location and find their bed has be untied by family during the wedding. They would literally have to tie the knot to get into bed.
Hit the hay, and hit the sack used to involve whacking your hay with a detachable bedpost spire to knock the bugs living in it down to a bowl of oil under your bed.
Bonus: honeymoon got its name from the tradition of the bride eating honey for the first month of marriage to increase chances of conception.
Wow, I just learned a lot today.
For a long ass period of time Europe slept on rope mattresses

You literally needed to tighten the ropes on your bed to sleep tight so it was comfortable.
Thank you!

Apparently that is not likely to be the origin of the phrase, but I am glad I learned about these early bed frames.
Sooo close to figuring out the hammock
Lol I know! Plus you reclaim so much space in a small hovel if you can take down your hammock every morning…
Honestly we still do this… japanese futons are the same parallel. We have a permanent bed in western bedrooms where the Japanese temporarily set theirs out and put it away in the morning. I could fit so much more stuff if i did that…
Sleeping on a futon on a tatami floor is really comfy, too. I find it great for my back (oddly enough).
The traditional reason most people do not sleep on the floor is to be suspended above the rats & cockroaches that come out at night. And in the winter, bed warming devices would be placed under the bed.
Can’t you store stuff under your bed though? We have several boxes under ours.
I mean i guess I could but I mostly store cats in zoomie mode under there so I’ve never done that.
Fun fact here, the term “sleep tight” refers to when beds were bundles of hay that were wrapped by rope.

Awwww, bitch…
Sick as tits bruv
You fuckin’ know it, bitch!
He looks happy.
Posting the source of this which is from Peter Jackson’s 2005 King Kong remake because it is genuinely one of the most tense, disturbing, and squirm inducing scenes I’ve ever seen from any movie ever until I saw the surgical Alien abortion in Prometheus.
Ooh. Now I want to see this movie. That scene got pretty stupid about halfway through, but it looks fun.
The movie is absolutely a bunch of dumb fun.
That scene is absolute nightmare material, in a movie that’s in no way a horror movie of any kind. This scene, and the one with the giant centipedes is enough to give anyone the bug-creeps for life.
There was a scene like this in the original King Kong, which made the test audiences run out of the theatre in terror, so it was cut. So Jackson replicated it and made it terrifying enough even for today’s audiences.
I had nightmares about it for years, the part in the meme in particular.
Hopefully you’re not still having them and this didn’t trigger anything.

I scrolled past fast enough, and the picture doesn’t have that awful muffled scream as the thing completely engulfs his head…
I spontaneously clenched real hard just from reading this and having the image pop up in my head again…
Shit, sorry.
No shit was expelled - that’s the nice thing about clenching!
Ouff
Yeah sounds bad. All my trauma are from real world experiences.
But I just bought the PJ King Kong so I might watch it. I don’t remember this scene at all.
The giant worms eating the guy with the machete is what always got me.
sleep tight
Yah, but sometimes you’ve gotta air it out.
