Jon Stewart is returning to The Daily Show, the groundbreaking comedy news program he had previously helmed for 16 years.

The homecoming, announced by Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios on Wednesday, comes after the production’s yearlong search for a replacement for host Trevor Noah – and just in time for the 2024 presidential election to heat up in earnest.

The plan is for Stewart to host every Monday, beginning on 12 February. He will also serve as an executive producer for the show, which will have a rotating lineup of comedians during the rest of the week.

tl;dr - Apple told him he had creative control. Then he wanted to do a story on China that China didn’t like and Apple said he couldn’t do it, so he walked.

Man, this century turned out so weird.

Absolutely. You know when Bush Junior was President, we called that crazy too, when he was elected for a 2nd term we basically lost all hope for the American people and USA as a nation. That was just too stupid in so many ways.
That USA was able to top that with Trump, makes you lose hope in humanity. USA was EDIT: (among) the first democracies in the world, but can’t do democracy even remotely well.
There is still hope, but it’s vanishing ever more over time. Nixon would be a hero of competence and integrity today, compared to Bush and Trump.
This is NOT just a one time off, this is now a pattern.

Some sources claim USA is the oldest democracy, apparently oldest doesn’t mean first?

USA was the first democracy in the world,

Off by a few thousand years there bud. Even if you want to limit it to “modern” democracies, Britain has the US beat by a hundred years.

The Magna Carta still has a couple statues left in Britain. But they repealed a lot of it as it became irrelevant or outdated.

That’s what needs to happen in the US too, but the country is set up to basically prevent changes in the constitution at this point because the founding fathers couldn’t foresee the size the country became and the spread of population and technologies across it.

Also the racism, so much racism.

Not the first democracy, debatably the first representative democracy out of a liberal revolution, by a couple of years. One of the first written constitutions.

But you know the big difference in how the US handles democracy? It has sacralized its foundational moment. France got there at the same time, and they’re on the fifth full refresh. There are vanishingly few examples in the world of liberal democracies that haven’t updated their systems in a major overhaul at least once. The same exceptionalism that leads to the debatable-at-best “first democracy” factoid makes it impossible to fix the very obvious flaws in the system.

I do agree that it’s weird to have lived through Bush and 9-11 and Iraq and now think of it as a quaint fun little thing. We all protested and felt righteous and Stweart was on TV when it was cool and fresh to do political comedy that way and it seemed like rock bottom.

        Good times.

I agree. Everybody is doing his shtick today and there’s no more common water cooler TV anymore, so it’s impossible to have the impact he had (if any, which itself is debatable).

If one needs proof, there’s always the pretty obvious fact that he already had a show until very recently and it’s not like anybody cared. I bet he’ll do great for TDS’ ratings, though. I’ll probably watch.

The Jon Stewart Crossfire episode is still one of my favorite interviews ever. It might not have been Jon’s shining moment, but it did cost Tuck his job. Though, thinking about it, tuck did pretty well for himself afterwards.

Yeah, and unfortunately, some of the correspondents seemed to be more about representation than being legitimately funny. I thought Noah was affable enough, but maybe too affable, if you know what I mean. I like Jon’s persona very much and the format suits him well. Craig Kilborn’s version of the show was barely memorable for me. I think I Tivo’ed it just because, but once Jon made it his own, I forgot all about the prior version.

The best thing on the show in recent years has been, ironically enough, a white dude - Jordan Klepper does standout work, especially when out talking to the magabunch. But he is rarely part of the show.

Comedy Central need to give him full employment, TBH. His show only lasted about a minute there, but it was great. The other funny people on there are the one white guy that is sort of the everyman and the white woman ( I think they were both given a chance to guest host too, and did pretty good), and then there is Ronnie Chang, who is usually hilarious. Love it when he’s on the screen.

As for many other guest hosts and correspondents - I don’t know, I guess some audiences confuse being very loud with actually being funny, but that is not my thing.

I had to look up their names, yeah, Desi. I’d rank them as Klepper, Michael Kosta, then Desi as far as hosting. Ronny Chieng needs more air time, though.

Also, if Al Franken and Samantha Bee are interested - I’d love to see more of them. Honestly, the show needs to expand its cinematic universe and maybe have several spinoffs and give all of these talents more time.

I like his “for the culture” segments for sure. I don’t remember much from his guest hosting stint. Honestly, I’d take just having the show back on with nearly any of the previous hosts, but please for the love of Zeus don’t give that host chair to Leslie Jones. I wish I found her even half as funny as she finds herself. Maybe she’s a comedian’s comedian or something, I just don’t get it, though.

Listened to the first half of his show via podcast for a while, mostly around the 2020 election and afterwards.

Just never hit with me. He would have some good takes, but it seemed like he was trying really hard to do Jon’s shtick, and it just fell flat. Feel the same about his stand up.

I hope he continues doing something with current event commentary. Hope he finds his niche.

That’s because Trevor Noah was objectively a terrible choice to fill that roll.

He might of have been a fine choice to take over from Craig Kilborn’s Daily Show, but not the deeply political satire show that Jon Stewart had turned it into.

His comedy isn’t for me, but he’s not an unfunny person. But his entire knowledge of American politics and culture seemed to mostly come from watching MSNBC, CNN, and reading the New York Times. His lack of nuance and a deeper understanding, well, it showed in the final product.

It’s almost like they looked at how well Jon Oliver did as a guest host and just assumed he’d be a diverse Jon Oliver.

Big fan of Stewart! So excited for this.

But can’t stop thinking of the story that Hasan Minhaj was pushed out of this role. He was supposed to be at the front of this race, then The New Yorker does an “expose” in him, he gets dropped from the race and he makes a video where he has receipts against the New Yorker piece. So some people claim that it was done just to get him dropped from the race.

Oh, my question was less about the term itself, but the background and what happened in relation to Hasan. I ended up searching for it and found it.

I liked his own show’s format, I don’t know if he’d be a great replacement for Jon/Noah. I really wish all this talent was given their own shows and given time to let them grow. The Jon Stewart Daily Show Cinematic Universe, if you will. You might say Colbert and Oliver are part of it, just on other networks. But Comedy Central should give Klepper, Minhaj, Bee, Roy Wood Jr., etc., their own shows (again, in some cases) and let them go, even if they are not raging successes at the very outset. Maybe even do crossover shows, etc…does that mean Comedy Central needs maybe to spin off an entire channel for fake news shows? Yes.

Can he do it for another 16 years?
