some people are trying to undo the progress the world made in the 90s and early 00s. it’s not just on this subject (abortion too, for example). even if this doesn’t affect everyone directly, it’s bad for the general mood and indirecty makes society and economy more dull and less innovative. it’s like a big weight pressing down on everyone.

Ok I feel like I’ve seen a bunch of reports on the threat of right wing domestic terrorism from DHS and the letter brigade without seeing a lot of reports on what they can broadcast they are doing to address those threats. Like is there a specific set of tools they have to get congressional approval for or can they just get to work on these fools the way they’ve done with orgs like the klan before.

honestly the DHS being involved in this is just confusing to me too since they don’t seem to do… much at all, it’s weird to see them squarely on the side of human dignity for once.

hence why i also cited the Human Rights Commission :)

I don’t think DHS actually has any major wins to its name. The original KKK was destroyed by the US military (deployed by authority of the president, but with legislature from Congress approving the measure), and the second KKK was destroyed by the IRS.

that’s pretty awful. :( i wouldn’t compare anything tho. imo i just like presenting the truth as it stands, comparing of suffering generally leads nowhere

It’s hard not to see the comparison when you posted this meme literally right after a post in the same format with a similar title addressing this issue in China.

yikes sorry i don’t mean to compare. it’s just putting the info out there.

edit: the reason i made the post was your title “why would the west do this,” and its implication that the west wouldn’t. the west does this shit. china does this shit. comparing oppression is a race to the bottom. being anti-fascist and loving your queer neighbors is universal.

The title wasn’t meant that the West doesn’t have problems with homophobia, the title was mocking the tendency of certain political groups to blame the actions of foreign actors on the West. Such as “The West made Russia invade Ukraine” or “Other countries are only homophobic as a response to Western oppression”

i get your interpretation but pretty sure ogmios here is doing veiled homophobia. their modlog shows no shortage of conservative talking points, unless corrected i don’t see this comment having been in good faith at all.

It’s not even veiled. It’s pure victim blaming. “Gay people wouldn’t be so bad if they just weren’t openly gay” type nonsense.

Eh, I mean Lemmy’s not nearly as bad as that other website, but that’s also a pretty low bar. Would certainly be nice if overt homophobes were swiftly banned, though.

lmfao they even got banned from vegan circlejerk… How sad does your existence have to be to go out of your way to troll a subculture community to the point of getting banned?
