Year two is out now: https://hexbear.net/post/2720771

So, I thought of making a sequential fortress for Hexbear to play. The rules of a sequential fortress is that a user controls the fortress for a year (starting and ending in early spring) and then hands the fort off to another user and makes a writeup. This is the same idea as the infamous Boatmurdered.

Roomtheaters – Expedition Leader’s log, Year 1

Expedition Leader: Radio Free Val

Year: 101

Starting Population: 7

Ending Population: 23

Fatalities: 1

Achievements: Discovered caverns, started metal industry, reached Hamlet, didn’t die

Summary: Strike The Earth! We have created a new fortress in a sparsely forested region with a small hill, a stream and amicable wildlife. After digging in a space for a trading depot and personnel exit (the 1 wide tunnel to the side, this is meant to be a cage trap hallway), the first priority was to create farms. These are done one level below the entrance to prevent anything from getting in after felling a tree (rip my old fortress where a titan got in through a hole in the ceiling where the roots used to be). Next, some stills and farm-related workshops before digging deeper and creating some rooms for the dwarves. These are glorified cells with a single bed and nothing else. But hey, it’s better than cold stone. Then, we created stockpiles for various goods before finding a massive vein of magnetite and coal. This will be critical for any iron industry. We quickly established a smelter and forge to create materiel and other iron goods in case combat is needed. In the meantime, out leatherworker was taken by a strange mood and a leather shop was build to accommodate them, however they lacked the needed leather to create a project. We slaughtered a horse to provide some leather but it was not enough for the undertaking. They later died due to dehydration after falling into a severe depressive episode. In a lighter note, we discovered a massive carvers system and a human monster hunter now resides with us. After a horde of troglodytes ran up from the cavern and tried to kill a couple of dwarven children, we killed them and temporarily sealed off the entrance to the cavern until cage traps can be made to secure the fort. We also discovered a pillar of obsidian studded with diamonds but elected not to mine it due to the stone being warm to the touch. We survived the winter with ample food supplies and expect greatness out of Roomtheathers, best of luck to my successor.

Goals For Next Leader:

  1. Memorialize the leatherworker who perished
  2. Fortify the caverns
  3. Get more seeds
  4. Strengthen military
  5. Mine the obsidian pillar to the southeast at elevation 28
  6. Dig deeper

Whoever wants to take over the fort for the next year, speak up and I’ll send you the save file and you can continue Roomtheaters.

Files: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18FJ8xCkc1GdBdzHCXen2cGnjumq5lYIY?usp=sharing I’ll try to keep this folder as a repository of all the saves so people can download it easily.

To pick up the fortress, download the file, extract it and move it to your steam save directory. On linux this looks like:

tar -xJvf bearmurdered.tar.xz;
mv -v ./region3 ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Dwarf\ Fortress/save

First verify that your DF save directory does not have a “region3” directory BEFORE moving the file over. It will permanently delete your world if you have one there

I am handing the fort off to @[email protected] for year 2. Strike the Earth, comrade!

Aw man, I haven’t played enough Dwarf Fortress lately to feel comfortable taking it over. Maybe I’ll study up and in a few weeks I can take the reins for a bit

    Rest in power, moody leatherworker.

I’m too incompetent to pick up the baton but I will follow this thread so as to learn.

    OH HELL YEAH

I’d like to get in on this at some point soon (maybe this weekend if nobody jumps at the opportunity), but since this appears to be the inaugural thread, I want to make a couple administrative suggestions.

1: We should try to make the saves public, instead of directly transferring them from player to player. This allows spectators to load the save and observe the progress - potentially making note of interesting engravings, character profiles/thoughts and such.

2: We should try to include a couple screenshots with each update, so people who don’t have the game can still kinda see passively watch how things develop. Never mind, I scrolled down.

I fully agree with that idea. The only reason I didn’t plan on that is that DF saved are big and 0x0.st doesn’t save big stuff very long. I might just use Google drive unless someone has a better high capacity, long term file sharing service. I’ll post the save soon. Strike the Earth and may Adamantine lie in your future. Roomtheaters is in your care.

Alright. I downloaded the save and was able to load it in DF. I will start my shift tomorrow after work.

I can’t promise anything right away but it is possible I can piggyback some file storage on top of the S3 bucket backing matapacos.dog. What’s a couple DF saves on top of 1.9TB of media attachments? I’d just have to figure out a minimal-hassle way to set up file uploads.

Mine the obsidian pillar to the southeast at elevation 28

    sounds like fun

    last time i did that...

a demon escaped the obsidian pillar it had been trapped in and rampaged throughout my fort

I’m expecting magma from the pillar as you usually get a notification about a strange volcanic wall when a demon is hiding. 28 is also really high for a demon. Warm rock also means magma most of the time. There’s a reason I didn’t dig it out though.

I’d be down but I can only imagine my logs will be like

Rith Amostgoden drowned in the caverns. Holy shit.

Catten Avuzîton got mauled by goblins. Holy shit. By the way, uh, Litast Ustuthubbul - a 3yo child - somehow defeated a forgotten beast. Also the entire Silverblade squad died and we don’t have enough coffins to bury them yet, so their ghosts have begun to roam the halls…holy shit

Zuntîr Kilrudubbul has crafted a masterwork toy anvil using the bones of the forgotten beast. The Captain of the Guard has decided to display it at the entrance by the guard dogs in the hopes of enticing any would-be thieves to only abscond with the anvil.

We’re losing morale due to the ghosts. Also Zutthan Dôbarkib is definitely a vampire.

Vampires are the worst. I had a 3 year old girl kill 8 of my best dwarves and I could only get rid of get by locking the doors when she went into to the Mayor’s room to murder him.

I’m down. However, every fortress I’ve ever run has quickly died for entirely controllable reasons. Expect fun.

    1. How do we sign up?

    2. Might be issues if people don’t stick to the same branch. Right now a lot of people are split between the beta branch and the main branch.

I’m thinking the expedition leader selects their successor at the end of their term but that might lead to issues against people in other time zones and those who aren’t terminally online. Since the current save is in main I think we should stick to main for now.

Actually, making a fool proof self-sustaining fort is not that difficult, to be honest, especially if it only has to survive a year. You can technically just dig in and wall yourself in, set up a few farms (you need surprisingly few crops to feed your dwarves) and breweries, train a few craftdwarves and the only thing that can kill you at that point is a very unlucky special mood (dwarf that is struck with inspiraion to create a legendary artifact, but if they can’t get the resources to make it, they might go berserk) that goes into a death spiral (a killed dwarf causes another to have an outburst of anger, killing another, which makes another start brawling etc), but even those can be managed.

And then, you can just automate most tasks so it runs itself indefinitely.
