Seems like there aren’t a lot of typical Elden Ring dungeons, just overworld stuff and then bigger dungeons for the more important bosses. Performance is really bad so far.

Died to the Parade Lion while it was at 1HP, Freja secured the kill just before I timed out, hell yeah, I’ll take it.

I beat my first remembrance boss earlier today, definitely a trial and error affair. The open world seems tigher in scope but looser in direction at the same time. I got stopped dead cold by a boss in Jagged Peak and so turned to level my self up. Having a good time so far

its pretty good so far. the introduction to the dlc is very unceremonious which kinda surprised me and it’s doesn’t feel like a particularly large step forward from the main game, but it’s still just very fun to explain a new fromsoftware world. I’ve only played a few hours and have only gotten to the first boss in the first legacy dungeon, the difficulty feels pretty fair too.

made two memes for the beginning of the dlc, very mild spoilers ahead:

early game spoilers early game spoilers

I’ve played most-ish? of the way through at this point. I’m not really a fan of the fragment rune system they added. I understand why they did but it feels very unbalanced right now. Like either you’re wayyy underpowered or wayyy overpowered and there’s no in between and it’s really noticeable between dungeon enemies and then the bosses. Once you get to level 5 or whatever you’re pretty much nuking everything that isn’t a boss.

There’s also no clear progression for this system. Why should I go to any of the side dungeons when the fragments are all over the place in the overworld or in the main legacy dungeons? What do I get from doing the side dungeons besides spending 45 minutes trying to navigate a catacomb only to get shit on by the Nameless King because I’m doing an unintentional SL1 attempt. Idk. feels like they are not really respecting my time with the way it’s setup currently. I wouldn’t have gone through that dungeon if I knew I was going to get shit on by the boss at the end because I wasn’t high enough level.

There are also other kinda dumb things that are clearly meant to make things take longer. Like why do I need to unlock spirit springs now? The rock to smash to enable it is 100 yards away but you’re having me look for it for what reason?

The bosses are pretty fun though. Except the hippo. They made it too goddamn big.

FYI due to a bug you can use Margit’s or Mogh’s Shackle to open the spiritstone rocks without having to hunt down the second rock stack. Make use of it before it gets patched out!

pretty sure the design purpose behind that is that they don’t want you to be able to jump down from wherever to the spirit spring. which makes sense considering how much more vertical the layout of this map is.

i dont know im not a fan, i kinda hate trying to figure out how to get places but turns out you have to go find a hole half way across the map and then travel there underground along a river full of bugs. Did I need to see the river full of bugs, Miyazaki? Was that important to you?

I don’t disagree, I’d really like to see how the numbers actually break down to make sense of what a difference it’s making. I’ve noticed that usually I’m able to rush bosses down fast enough that it’s never an endurance slog like Elden Beast, but every hit I take is doing like 50% of my HP and I’m wearing heavy armor.

Like why do I need to unlock spirit springs now? The rock to smash to enable it is 100 yards away but you’re having me look for it for what reason?

Oh, is that how those work. Noticed it was broken and figured it might have just turned on later.

      Re: progression, I just beat

      spoiler

Mesmer at blessing level 10, and I’m getting the impression that the main story is coming to a close but there’s still like 3 entire areas of the map I walked into and just turned around so maybe there’s lots of side stuff?

ive been watching it as i level up, it looks like its between 4-5% increase to your defense and attack power every level. So you should have something like 1.5x your normal damage at level 10.

I’ve noticed that usually I’m able to rush bosses down fast enough that it’s never an endurance slog like Elden Beast, but every hit I take is doing like 50% of my HP and I’m wearing heavy armor

you should also grab the dragoncrest shield talisman from the haligtree if you dont have it already, it’s another 20% to your physical defense. There is also a talisman that boosts defense in the expansion but i can’t remember where i found it. It will stack with the dragoncrest shield talisman. So between that and the fragment levels the bosses are hitting me like dark souls 3 bosses. I’ve found that all of the bosses so far have been pretty easy to stance break with a great hammer which has made things much smoother for sure.

Huh, that’s a lot more than I thought. Honestly an even more bizarre choice to include it at all if it’s just linear growth.

And yeah, already running the dragoncrest (and usually whatever resistance talisman is best), great jar arsenal, and erdtree’s favor +2. Everything still hits like a truck, idk. I, too, am playing ungabunga (ruin greatsword), and I usually get 2+ full staggers per fight.

it’s cool so far, definitely an understated introduction but some good vistas and really enjoyed the bosses i’ve done so far. i hope we get a performance patch cause my 1080TI is struggling a little compared to base game and have had a couple of freezes/crashes. one thing that’s annoyed me is some of the map fragments are really roundabout to navigate to when they feel like they’re quite close judging by the little indicator on the undiscovered map. one of them almost felt like it was supposed to be a puzzle like the caelid chasm, but it was just a really roundabout route. partly just me not being used to the verticality in this game compared to souls, but when the lack of info makes you feel like you’re close to the map fragment when actually you have to take a wild route to get there i find that slightly annoying

reigen-sweat dang, considering i got a silky smooth 49.33 fps on the base game I think I’m gonna wait a bit until there’s a few patches or something

I am technically below spec (rx 570) and had similar performance in the base game. The only setting that helped was lowering the resolution, and when i did i could actually push around half the settings to medium from min. Outside of the map and icons it wasnt actually much of a downgrade surprisingly, so i would reccomend trying that and see if it applies to you.

Don’t know what your settings were but I was on the “high” preset before. Might try fiddling with the grass detail settings later (I think all the long grass that was shown off in the trailer may be the biggest culprit).

Ive heard its not much shitty overall framerate but really bad freezing and hitching, it feels like rubber banding when you have a ping of 1000000. I’m going to wait until its been patched a few times. but its been ages since i played the base game

Loving it so far. I’m still only in the first area, but it’s much denser on legacy dungeons than the base game was. Parade Lion kicked my ass until I pulled out Freja, and had my ego soothed to see that it drops a Rememberance. Easily Maliketh-level difficulty.

The new NPCs seem really likeable; I love when Fromsoft actually has some real, tangible characters you can interact with.

Im kinda “upset” that it took this long for dlc simply because I played the game a ton when it came out, dead all the endings or whatever, farmed the chicken (we all know the chicken) and I tried picking it up the other day again and uh… I dunno. I’d have to start a totally new game at this point, but also, fuck that. I feel like dlc ~6 months after release was about the sweet spot. It’s just been way too long, imo. I really enjoyed the game but it’s not a game to be played into the ground and then picked back up two years later

    … I’ll probably still get the dlc…

I just started Elden Ring like a month ago and just can’t get into it. I feel like its lacking the magic of BB and DS. I specifically waited because I wanted to upgrade my pc and then wait for the dlc and now i’m glad I did cuz pirating it saved me money.

        It is sadness

I don’t regret buying it, but the experience is extremely hollow compared to DS 1. Just further proof that absolutely nothing in the world is safe from the enshittification of Capitalism.

Nah. Elden Ring is actually just as good as Dark Souls and I’m saying this as some who is otherwise the biggest hater around. I haven’t played Bloodborne because I’m not going to buy a PS4 for a single fucking game, but Elden Ring is easily up there with the best Fromsoftware has ever made. It’s actually a worthy followup to Dark Souls 1, unlike either of the sequels.

Also just going “enshittification” and “captialism” without actually looking at the thing itself is fucking stupid.

not sure what they mean exactly but there’s a lot of the “paths circle back on each other” type thing going on. The levels have a wide variety of altitudes involved and there are caves and things to get to different areas.

There are also a bunch of references to earlier games, like there’s a new londo type area at one point. You can tell in some of the character and boss designs they took inspiration (and even movesets) from bosses from earlier games. You can definitely see moves from Sekiro and DS3 in there, there are some DS2 influences as well that are more obvious than in the base game.

It has more legacy dungeon areas for its space compared to the base game, and those areas are also larger. I had a moment that reminded me of ds1 in one of them, but i wouldnt say its like ds1 because of that.

I’ve not seen much so far, but it feels like a slightly more dense and overall tighter map than the original. The specific points of interests are also just very slightly more open than they were in the original game where they often felt like they only had a single entrance point.

Feels pretty iterative on what they did in the base game.

I’ve played for about 3.5 hours and so far I’d say it feels most like Limgrave in Elden Ring. It’s a giant open world, so not really sure how much it even could resemble DS1.

First experience was getting clowned on by a naked dude with bear claws. The lion boss was a lot of fun, liked the music. Got to a second boss, the carian knight with the two swords. Fun fight and I keep getting close, but it’s bedtime.

The invasions and npc-type enemies are way too hard compared to everything else. I wanna find more new weapons (I only have one of the perfume bottles). I like how the bosses have NPC assists (especially since I crash when summoning golds).

I’m playing dual occult hoslow whips with arcane. Bleed is still good. I hope I can make a good arcane or faith martial arts build, those looks cool.
