The full comic is even more prescient.

EDIT: I don’t like the ableist parts though. I specifically meant the prescience of the “singularity” power fantasies that promise more comfort to already comfortable affluent techbros.

drawing cartoons bad??? having special interests bad??? speedrunning… bad??? was so so good until the last like 4 panels

the worst part is that these are all like fundamentally less-consumerist activities much of the time and are therefore fundamentally incomparable to vapid silicon valley singularist nerdshit

really reveals how fundamentally incapable people are of comprehending the breadth of ableism that we can’t fundamentally disconnect the very real material evils of the white neurotypical nerd from the autistic invader zim fan we hated in middle school because they weren’t playing our social games enough

i-think-that The “singularity” and related nerd rapture escapist power fantasies deserve to be mocked and tend to be comfort prophecies for the already comfortable.

yeah except that’s the part we love too, it’s the weird implication that you can’t think your art is great or something or have other ‘obsessive’ interests without being inherently infantile that i take issue with

Edit: and to be clear I do not think, for instance, marvel fan-ism is like good or ok. I’m talking about actual hobbies like regular traditional art or composition or, even, nerdier stuff that’s actually cool, like radio shit or linux tweaking. It’s unfortunate because the comic actually seems more condemning of the latter than the former even though I would say there’s much more overlap between marvel nerds and apple nerds than there is between apple nerds and, like, xX_phatcockdrawer_Xx

Me going to my high school reunion solely to tell the jocks “You were right about everything. You were trying to help me.”

Although it’s something the comic touched up on a bit, I’m surprised there isn’t some businesses that’s all about repurposing e-waste. Just install ubuntu or something and then sell them for cheap.

there are some. Not enough, and probably way more outside the imperial core, but I’ve seen a few. I think it’s getting better as time goes on and tech iteration slows down. 10 years ago it would’ve been something of a struggle to run modern web pages on a 5 year old laptop, let alone an office suite, much moreso than using a 2019/2020 laptop today.

The bigger thing now I guess is the proliferation of people not even having a computer and just using their smartphone for everything. Smartphones are treated as an absolute essential, so people just suck it up and buy a new one when they can’t get any more life out of the old one, rather than adapting their usage. Mandatory app updates and built-to-fail batteries and other components just seal the deal

it’s a really weird and wild veer off course from the salient take of “most nerds are actual evil soulless monsters” to the weird and brainwormed idea that “my idea of Socially Acceptable Interests and Socially Acceptable Amount of Interest is objectively right and is the foundation of adulthood (i don’t infantilize autistic people btw i swear!!!)”

That part was what-the-hell to me.

I mostly remembered the “singularity” dunk and its prophecy of additional comfort to already comfortable techbros.
