Summary

Trump’s team, led by NIH nominee Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, is exploring withholding federal research grants from “woke” universities deemed lacking in academic freedom.

Bhattacharya aims to tie NIH’s $25 billion in annual funding to free speech metrics and punish institutions accused of cancel culture.

He also plans reforms such as funding replication studies, limiting publication costs, and enacting term limits for NIH leaders.

Critics warn this politicization risks undermining scientific progress on critical diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s, while experts caution such changes would face significant implementation challenges.

Brain drain is what caused the US golden era.

Keep your eyes on what countries start nabbing up the educated. That’s where to go when America fails.

AI folks are going to Canada and most other CS folks are going to Europe. The technical brain drain has been ongoing since the early 2000s when tech companies started offshoring and treating their employees like shit.

As always, the people who left first are the top performers and then it starts moving down the chain.

The US is still a net importer of brain though. It’s the most generous country with undergrad financial aid in the world and has many of the world’s research powerhouses, at least until Trump destroys them. As someone from the third world who has moved/plans to move (depends on how you look at it) abroad, the US is very unappealing right now. Y’all are losing the technological race one immigrant at a time.

This man will destroy US technological hegemony, which tbf won’t be all that bad for the rest of the world but Americans, y’all really don’t wanna experience being on the wrong end of the technology spectrum. It’s not a fun time.

That is trump’s end goal. Every little thing he does is meant to undermine American exceptionalism. He works for Putin.

and when a little university from one of them (other) “shithole countries” passes the u.s. in research advancements, we can celebrate with more trump biblestrumbles for everyone!

    Prequel meme:

Bhattacharya: Universities will need to allow free speech to get full funding.

Everyone: So universities will need to allow free speech for a free Palestine, right?

    Bhattacharya: :-)

These are the ones. Not the CEOs, these people. To get rid of weeds, you need to pull out the root.

I think everything they do will be worse than this if they can get away with it. And since they don’t give a shit about the law, they probably will a lot of the time.

I like funding for replication, but there’s a 999% those replications will be biased under Trump, confusing the fields for years

I mean… The education disparity is already a states’ right issue at this point. I just wish my self sufficient powerhouse of an economy state would stop paying taxes if they’re withholding emergency and education funding
