An experiment has begun.

There’s a button.

That’s it. Just a button… and a timer counting down.

Anyone can press it. Everyone sees what happens. And every press changes things forever.

  • One shared button
  • No undo, no reset
  • A collective test of curiosity, restraint… or chaos

Some of you will hold the line. Some of you won’t last five seconds.

Either way, once it’s over… it’s over.

The Button

So the only question is:

Do you press it?

The Button is open to anyone on any federated platform, be that Lemmy, Piefed, Mastodon… even Stegodon!

Any user from any instance can sign in and press the button, but you only get one chance.

To add another layer to this, users can choose which faction to join, and the “winner” is the faction that holds the button the longest amount of time before it eventually runs out.

Initially a press of the button resets the timer to 15 minutes - this may reduce if the game carries on for a while. At the time of this post, there is about 60 minutes until the button expires. The first button press will be available when there’s 15 minutes left, i.e. in 45 minutes, but you can sign up now to be ready!

There is also a permanent record of the first pusher :)

With 13 hours 20 minutes my estimate of 6 hours wasn’t that bad. But the reason it failed was not night, but probably people being in the office.

I wonder if people got too greedy and waited too long to press, or if we ran out of people

Thank you for making this event and to the mods for helping! Having the live chat and seeing every team trying to come up with strategies (plus the friendly banter!) was fun :D

Can we have the button back today? Maybe with a cool down time di people can press it again after 1h or so without creating multiple accounts?

I have a lot of work to do on it, but do people really want it back so quickly?

        I can add a 1 hour cooldown though for a round 2 :)

Maybe in a week or two, TheButton Redox, once you’ve had time to make your tweaks and a bit of word to get round.

It would be nice to see it back on April 1St for the Americans to have a go at it. But I understand it you are busy or have a life to attend to.

I think one hour is way too early. In that setup four or five people can keep it going forever.

Imo, it’s kinda lame that this ended before April Fools even began in the US. What’s the point of having an April fools day joke if people can’t even experience it?

It’s sad that it’s dead already. But the world is much larger than the US, it only makes sense to start it at UTC April 1st, in my opinion

I quoted GLaDOS saying “Don’t press that button. You don’t know what you’re doing.”

… and no one pressed the button. It ended.

Definitely not a bad decision. It’s weird because activity picked up as the morning came, so i wasn’t worried about it at all.
Then, in the hour i was gone, it died. Bummer.

I at least wanted to be there to keep it going if it was about to time-out! As the morning arrived, activity in chat and joins picked up so i wasn’t worried about it, but then it died in the hour i was away. I was so bummed because i could have easily kept a closer eye, if necessary. I just didn’t think it was.

My bet: the buttons dies after less than six hours, because most people on Lemmy are living in European or American timezones.

It’s not asking for your password, it just needs you to tell it your username and server so it can send you a magic link. It’s technically logging in, but it needs to know who you are so you can press the button (and use the chat).

This is how this kind of event always works on the Fediverse. It’s not putting your account at risk and I don’t really see the problem.
