Its really good. Six factions, different game modes like Arena, Classic, Single Hero and Scenarios, plus a campaign. At the moment only campaign Act 1 is available, but that is already 10+ hours. I think there are also hotseat and multiplayer modes. There is a ladder as well which I have not tried yet. Some of the music is really nice and I like the colorful art style. Each faction also has around 18 heroes with different skills.
Each of the factions feels pretty unique and has 7 units . Each of the 7 units has 2 upgraded version with different stats and / or skills.
The game was really hard at release, but they hotfixed that so easy and normal are now doable for noobs like me.
The only thing missing (for me) at the moment is proper team modes and co-op, but that is currently the developers number one priority.
Reviews are very positive at around 89 percent as of writing, and the game seems to have a bright future ahead, with over 500,000 copies sold in just a couple of days. Long-term support is basically guaranteed.
All of this is coming from someone who does not have much nostalgia for the series beyond playing Heroes 5 a bit. Even a lot of the grognards seem to agree that this is the best entry in the series in a very long time
Ok but can you steamroll everyone with infinite skeletons

Necropolis and skellies are in but I havent tried them yet. So far I only played Temple (holy human faction) and failed and im currently fucking around with grove (woodland creatures, druids and fauns etc) will probably fail again but it feels more even this time.
I may be the only one, but I appreciate that they tried new spins on the formula in HoMM 4 and 5, and I think part of the reason why 6 and 7 were so bad was that they were just trying to do 3 again. Which is why it is pretty hard to justify this looking good to me. Is it just because its honest about just being 3 again?
5 was different but generally considered by the community the last good Heroes game. I cant comment on how close Olden Era is to 3 since barley played 3 but the community has been very positive towards Olden Era. If you want something vastly different than heroes 3 I dont think you will enjoy Olden Era though.
Well see as I said, it looks really good to me, but it also just looks like 3 to me.
It does have differences to 3 like each unit having 2 different upgrade paths and there are factions that didnt exist in the old games. Theres also the focus point system that adds another layer to the combat different from magic. But as I said I barley played 3 so I dont think I could judge wether its a big departure. I just know that to a lot of the community 3 is like a holy grail and a game that was just a very competent 3+ would be very welcome to most of them.
Maybe a spicy take but. …Like I have no nostalgia for 3 and I probably (heresy) would consider it a good but overrated game probably greatly improved by its modding community.

So it’s doing 5 but in the art style of 3. I can justify this to myself now!
Which one of them was the Ubisoft one? Played lots of HOMM3 via hotseat with friends as a kid, then bought the 3D Ubisoft one years later. Its greatest weakness to me was the horribly generic WoW/Warhammer clone art style
You mentioned wow style so yo’ure definitely thinking of 5.
Interesting, I haven’t heard of this at all. It’ll need to be pretty good to beat Songs of Conquest, which I’ve found to be the best ‘HoMM’ since 3/5
I havent really clicked with Songs of Conquest kinda bounced off of it. But you are right thats a game I need to give another try.
I really like it. It’s not just aping H3. It’s more distinct from any HOMM than they are from each other, except for 4. Lots of unique and clever mechanics that make it its own beast in a way that my best friend and I, who grew up on these games, really clicked with.
I’m glad this genre is getting some movement, I remember playing something similar called warlords 3 like 20 years ago and being into it, now there’s songs of conquest and this game, wonder how long they plan to be in EA
Explore a world…

OF MIGHT AND MAGIC

only tangentially related, but M&M ripped. it’s a shame it never got the morrowind entry and died out before that, because 6-9 felt pretty similar to daggerfall
