I was looking through my YouTube recommendations and in them was a sub-1k views video from a channel called “basedcon” titled “Ayn Rand and Science Fiction.” Now I guessed that I was not going to enjoy the video but out of morbid curiosity I did open it to read the description, which was in praise of Ayn Rand.
Clicked on the channel and saw such wonderful titles as “Has Publishing Forgotten About Men?” “Real American Heroes,” and “Has the Left Lost the Plot?”
Nearly all these videos have less than 50 views. Many are less than 15. They’ve been uploaded over a two year period and they all seem to take place in a small venue (none of the thumbnails have a clear shot of the audience but I’d be surprised if the room has even 50 seats in it) in a kind of shitty hotel.
I decided to open a video titled “Dispatches from the Culture War” in a private window so that hopefully this doesn’t ruin my YouTube algorithm. After a minute of the moderator shilling his shitty mil sci-fi book he introduces the first guest on this panel and that guy says “my book is an illustrated courtroom drama of transgenderism vs biological sciences bringing the Scopes Monkey Trial up to date for the 21st century.” And when I heard that I just burst out laughing. It’s incredible that these dipshits managed to organize a half-assed convention, or that anyone thought it was worthy of taking the time to film the panels let alone immortalizing them by uploading them to YouTube.
The only notable thing about this con is that the co-creator of DOOM went there to fight against wokism. And his video only has 1.2k views, the most on the channel, and based on the thumbnail is a 70 minute long recording of a zoom call projected onto a screen because even he couldn’t be bothered to go fucking Michigan to attend something called BasedCon.
EDIT: I decided to listen to a couple more minutes of the panel and it keeps getting funnier. There’s a woman on the panel named Rachel Fulton Brown, and apparently she’s a legitimate professor of Medieval Studies at the University of Chicago and has, for 10 years now, been one of the champions of a movement to allow open white supremacy in the discipline. I’ve got a passing interest in Medieval Studies so I remember reading an article years ago that was about that struggle. I imagine she was probably named, but I don’t recall now. EDIT 2: The third panelist ran some gaming magazine and he’s talking about gamergate and how gamers are oppressed by cancel culture. “Milo Yiannopoulos is the Bill Maher of the right wing.” Honestly, this is hilarious.
Currently writing a script for my first youtube video and I’m just constantly stopping and starting due to self-doubt. I keep worrying that it is too dull or uninteresting or too long without enough substance and people won’t enjoy it. But this is an important reminder that if guys like this make slop like this without any shame or self-doubt then I shouldn’t be worried about my own stuff. The bar is buried 10 feet below the ground on youtube. Just having competent editing and not going into red faced rants about the wokes is enough to make a video well above average on the platform.

Maybe it will suck, but making the video and finishing it is the best way to learn how to make something better.
Not that it necessarily will suck, maybe it will be great, but just to humor the concern I think that’s the best way to approach it.

Edit: meant to mention I recently got a degree in biology and none of my lecturers had an issue with the uni flying the pride flag, and were happy to use Campbell’s biology (which explicitly, if somewhat clumsily, acknowledges trans people) as a textbook. This isn’t idle speculation - mainstream biology acknowledges trans people:D

It’s extra apparent here how thin the veneer is for these people’s creative pursuits are. Debates about being trans except it’s in a courtroom? The “creativity” is a barrel and suspenders for their political transgressions.
Some of my favorite lines I ever write are the implications of an aristocracy of industry leaders having to live beyond a mountain range from an old, strong, developed communist society. The lines that subvert expectations are under delivered and it gives them a certain charm. For example, a member of a fascist paramilitary is covered in tattoos - face, hands, the lot. Someone asks about why he’s covered in them and he goes “every time the communists scare me I get one more.” The implication being that they live in a world where the communists are undeniable and winning. If I spent detail like they did, I’d have a ridiculous person trying to knock a depiction of magical China, but instead this world is different. The instantiation of communism is different. They’re in a different geopolitical reality. That’s why it’s creative.
Moreover, if I spent detail the way these people do it would just be annotating the communist manifesto saying “the rich are like dark elves: evil by nature, my shitty boss is an orc class traitor”

I will say the actual subject matter is rather removed from this explanation. It’s a DnD style adventurer who took 1 level in warlock during his quest and wants out of his pact. He winds up starting a company selling warlock pacts, letting patrons gamble on the outcomes of the warlocks under his contracts, and ultimately perpetrating a 2008-style financial collapse of the magic weave (an homage to Karsus’ Folly)
