The writing can be a little hack, but clearly the animators put a lot of work in. The whole creepy art-deco design of Gotham is really good. Plus there’s lot of cool effects, like Two-Face’s other face being shown in lighting.
I’ve been giving it a re-watch and have been surprised at how good it is.
Bruce Timm and Paul Dini (largely Timm on the art side) really defined a whole generation of cartoon art. Not to mention that most of what people know about Batman and his rogue gallery was invented by them.
The DCAU had some really talent people, be Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy. Or people like Dwayne Mcduffie and Jonh Semper Jr. during the later years.
Mark hamill is such a fucking good Joker that it ruined all other performances for me
Yes! Creepy art deco Gotham city looks incredible.
The intro is an all-timer for me, it pushes all my nostalgia buttons. I used to watch that show religiously as a kid, it was by far my favorite
The season 3 art style change was a huge downgrade but at least the writing was still good, and we got a lot of superman and supergirl crossover episodes during that season.

The April Fools Day episode gets a rewatch from me on occasion, mostly due to the special music theme. It’s also just a fun episode of Joker doing his thing. Oh, and the side bit with Alfred is so dry yet silly. I think the intro for the series is also completely iconic for animation and Batman aesthetics.
It also gave us The Big O, which almost answered the immortal question of “What if Bruce Wayne got in the EVA?”.

(I’d forgive the stagnant domination of nostalgia if they went back to go all Twin Peaks: The Return with Season 3)
i wrote the lyrics for the Big O intro theme music.
Well shit that’s awesome. It’s a fun intro - I remember slowly punching the air (only vaguely in time to the music) like I had those big ol’ piston elbows.
lol, sorry im joking. i just remember the lyrics as that voice saying “Big O” repeatedly to the music.
basically the sort of lyrics i would come up with if i forgot the real words to any song.
…I wanted to believe. But hah, no worries. “Big O (repeat x50)” to the tune of Flash, seemed like a Hexbear-y kinda jam.
I like it when animation experiments with styles.
As much as the art change in season 3 was a huge downgrade from season 1 and 2. I still like the Dark Knight Returns parody episode.
Agreed, but the art quality isn’t always consistent, specifically the AKOM episodes.
I think some of the BtAS team are also involved with Batman: Caped Crusader, which is also alright. If I’m not mistaken, the second season is coming out in a few weeks.
yeah Bruce Timm is on that. major props to him for keeping the jj abrams stink off of it.
Caped Crusader felt so still to me. It feels like a flash animation compared to Btas. And they have unlimited Bezos Bucks for the new one
being drawn on black paper is such a cool and fitting style
The original Clayface episode was animated by much of the same team that animated Akira. I think that studio did a number of episodes. I recall the episode The Gray Ghost having excellent animation too.
