The thing is, alleged “secret ethnic cleansing” that still has no direct evidence after a decade is not as bad as the visible abuse that the US publicly lumps on minorities. I’d rather live in Xinjiang than be a black American any day, and the statistics back me up.

China is way worse than the US.

Except for the West Bank, which is obviously anti-American and anti-Israel, and Pakistan which is so heavily tied to China through hundreds of mutual agreements which makes it pretty much a vassal state, the southeast Asian countries – Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia – do have sizeable Chinese emigre populations which also have not only large businesses but also influence over some aspects of those countries’ government policies including foreign trade and relationships.

I could be wrong but the Chinese émigrés don’t necessarily like China in so far as they don’t like the CCP. They emigrated for a reason and ten years ago, CCP demanded vocal loyalty of Chinese diaspora which did not go down well for obvious reasons.

But I imagine that the reason Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia have more favourable view of China is because Beijing knows well how to isolate them from supporting their fellow ASEAN neighbours Vietnam and Philippines, who are having maritime dispute with China. That being said, the survey did not ask Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan on their view of China. It will completely change the story.

I could be wrong but the Chinese émigrés don’t necessarily like China in so far as they don’t like the CCP.

That’s why at one point during the Duterte regime the Philippines had two completely different Chinese emigre factions: those favoring the Mainland, and those against it, and then there were major enclaves serving the Mainland workers doing the offshore gambling operations until the current president Marcos put to an end of it.

China may be a dictatorship, but they actually put tax money into public projects. When they say they are going to do a project for the next X years it actually gets done. As a result, when cool new projects come up, the infrastructure is already there. It is one of the reasons why Chinese EVs are so good and so cheap.

Meanwhile, we have the US where the government is wholly noncommittal to public services that don’t extract money from their citizens. They frequently break contracts and agreements when they are no longer profitable or beneficial to the upper class. We have private militaries kidnapping and killing legal citizens just for existing.

It’s no wonder people view the US less favorably than China. Both are evil, but at least China doesn’t behave like a petulant child.

There was a documentary about how china handles business, damn if I can find it now.

They crap out a new city with a port, they offer people bonus state benefits to move there. (normally if you move out of your original area, you lose state benefits) Then they order the state run banks to give businesses 0% loans for whatever industry they’re trying to ingest. They make sure that all the businesses they need get on board and fulfill the needs of the manufacturing and BAM, super cheap hard to make things.

They did with with solar, and they did this with EV’s

China has some pretty heinous human rights violations, but the US has the ICE-stoppo shooting down legal workers in the streets in front of their kids and we basically handed over all the arms needed to genocide Palestine.

Americans scream and spit on Chinese democracy while they cling to electoral colleges and governor appointed senators and the fight to disenfranchise minority voters en mass.

I just don’t know how to take any of it seriously. China’s a dictatorship because it’s ruled by a single, seemingly insurmountable communist party. But Texas and Florida can elect Republicans to a bulletproof supermajority for 40 years and that’s just the Will Of The People.

A Congress with a 20% approval rating enjoys a Lockean Mandate, while a Parliament with 50-70% approval is a tyrannical regime of brutal oppression.

And don’t even get me started on prison population…

How are we even defining democracy anymore? It just seems like American Exceptionalism.

Chinese democracy is an oxymoron. Not saying American is one at this point either (especially after Trump is finished decimating everything from his 2020 temper tantrum). But let’s not prop up one as better than the other. The CCP strait up sucks too. Better if both governments failed and a better system was put in place for the benefit of both the Chinese and Americans.

How are we even defining democracy anymore?

There are multiple organisations invested in rating democracies worldwide, the main one is from The Economist EIU ,(https://www.eiu.com/n/campaigns/democracy-index-2025/, there are numerous places where the raw data is published more accessible such as here: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/democracy-index-eiu).

I personally prefer the index made by Freedom House (https://freedomhouse.org/report/freedom-world) because it includes what a regular citizen experiences:

For each country and territory, Freedom in the World analyzes the electoral process, political pluralism and participation, the functioning of the government, freedom of expression and of belief, associational and organizational rights, the rule of law, and personal autonomy and individual rights.

Their assessment of the US democracy:

EIU (2024): 7.85/10, “flawed democracy” Freedom in the world score (2025): 81/100

These scores obviously are not about other things that matter, like economic stability or access to healthcare.

Just like almost every industy in the US. Agriculture - heavily subsidized. Fossil fuels - heavily subsidized. Medicine - heavily subsidized (even if the patients don’t see any of it). Defense contractors of every shade - heavily subsidized. Only difference is that the US subsidizes to help the billionnaires. China subsidizes to help the general populace.

Tbh, China has had a huge debt and property crisis the past few years. The US Republicans like to complain about debt (which they primarily cause, but that’s a different discussion) but China’s debt to GDP ratio is 3 times higher than the US.

A lot of this is brought on by all of the housing construction that China’s been doing the past couple decades to dodge recessions. Many Chinese families now own several homes, most of which are uninhabited, for use as an investment vehicle. And most of these homes have been bought with debt.

The problem with China’s situation is that a lot of these homes are build in giant blocks in the middle of nowhere, creating giant ghost cities with almost nobody living in them. Plus these housing block are not made well, with improperly mixed concrete, so they won’t last very long, making them a terrible investment.

Add the fact that China’s birthrate has plummetted below replacement levels, and the Chinese population is about to start quickly dropping, meaning there will be little demand for housing, causing any values these homes had to drop as well.

China is in a “calm before the storm” style of situation at the moment, but in a few years it’s going to get bad

The “ghost city” thing is an outdated myth. China built up development for long term plans in anticipation of future demand, intending for them to be underpopulated in the short term.

Bloomberg - China’s Ghost Cities Are Finally Stirring To Life After Years Of Empty Streets

60 minutes ran a story in 2013 using the Zhengzhou New Area as an example of a “ghost city.” Today, it’s population is 1.3 million.

This is one of the limitations of capitalism and that perspective, that relies solely on market signals to determine what to build when. If there’s an undeveloped region, there’s not going to be a lot of people want to live there. But if you build up the infrastructure, it creates demand. China still has a very large rural population and is trending towards urbanization.

Tbh, China has had a huge debt and property crisis the past few years. The US Republicans like to complain about debt (which they primarily cause, but that’s a different discussion) but China’s debt to GDP ratio is 3 times higher than the US.

Source? The only thing I could find similar to that claim was this which lists China’s total public and private debt at 300% GDP. The same figure for the US is 265% GDP. Comparing only central/federal government debt, the IMF lists China’s at 88% GDP and US at 120% GDP.

I hate that take, that dictators have an edge over democracy just because one thing worked out. Like the soviet union (it was high oil prices that made half of it possible, not the 5 year gosplans).

Democracies have tools too and do invest in underpopulated areas and so on, for example Airbus was “put” in Toulouse (partly of course) and it too took like 10 years before things got rolling.

So think about when the dictatorial regime decides something bad (like going to war or imprisoning people just because they might be critical thinkers) before jumping on the “Dictators build roads fast!!” (<= that was mustache man BTW) idea.

Bet russians are regretting their dictator right now, getting parking tickets because they line up in too long lines to get gas. Dictator solutions to people’s problems…

I traveled outside of Beijing about 2 years ago and I passed through a ghost city. I could see, literally, from horizon to horizon nothing but the same exact style apartment buildings and construction cranes in the distance. In the streets though, nothing. You know if a unit is occupied because there will be an AC unit in the window and I estimated about 5% of the units were occupied. I could count the number of people I saw on one hand.

              construction cranes in the distance

So it sounds like it was still early in development. As I said, they’re planned to be underpopulated at first because they are built in anticipation of demand rather than in response to it. Other areas that have been reported on as “ghost cities” have since been populated.

From the chats I had with folks in China they said these massive developments got promoted to people as investments. So people put their savings into them thinking they’d pay off. Turned out these new units were far too expensive for the vast majority of Chinese people to afford so they remained empty. It is going to be a mess. I wouldn’t be surprised if the gov just stepped in and seized the properties and rented/sold them out at lower prices just to prevent a collapse and put them to use.

Well, sure. China invests in many countries, improving infrastructure and the like, while also extracting resources. The US just pays a dictator who then skims even more off the top while beating up the citizens and forcing them to work hazardous resource extraction for little money.

China may improve infrastructure in exchange for exclusive access to rare earth metal mines and other natural resources.

They are basically colonizing Africa and developing countries.

Improving infra with bad quality that needs to be maintained at a higher rate than domestic stuff.

So many road repairs in Germany had to be redone because the bids were done by foreign nations and they half-assed it.
Because why should they care after completing the contract ᕕ(ᐛ)ᕗ

Some of these countries can’t afford infrastructure at all. Even if your opinion is correct, do you think they’d prefer having no infrastructure vs having some that needs maintenance? And let’s not hold their investment to Western European standards, that’s ridiculous to compare countries possibly climbing out of a century or more of problems both internal and external to what wealthy Europeans have.

Hmmm…Dirt road you can keep up at a reasonable level but drive slow vs pothole street.
          Economic boom vs slow growth.

Life has many facettes. No single answer to them all.
Especially not mine as I have never experienced that as a whole.
If the local community supports it, they deserve it.

Both are shit. But domestic ones can be held responsible for the shit they produced.
Try that with foreign ones. Especially chinese or russians. They will tell you to fuck off or change their names and join the bidding war under a different contractor name.

You can dislike companies incorporated with certain countries legal systems without any consideration for race.

Russians and Chinese companies can be multi racial and still use their government’s and provided legal structures as shields for fraud in other countries shrug

I think the bigger criminals on the global stage in terms of lives impacted are the western companies that hide behind their governments and provided legal structure.

There is no reason to think that a chinese or russian foreign contractor would do a worse job than any other contractor simply because they’re russian or chinese, other than racism.

Who else does global projects (on the scale of China) and gives you the middle finger if any disputes come up?
I hear of that way often about China or Russia than the US.

Example for Russia (can’t link to the header):
              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCP_Foundation -> Legal disputes -> Trademark disputes

So…no. Just experiences on what I read about online and in newspapers.
It’s just that my western media highlights those disputes more prominent than not.

Can you give me examples on countries that like to do the same in the west?
Example: Japan contractors fucking with China and giving them the bird when it goes to shit.

              PS:
              It’s xenophobic, not racist.

Honestly: Fuck off with your own prejudices if you want to correct mine.

Now to your example: Mentioning the US is cheating. :p
                  They are equally as bad.

              • No you allege that this is something russian and chinese companies do, as in them being russian or chinese makes them somehow shiftier. There is no reason to bring the nation of certain companies into this if you don’t think that russian or chinese people are more prone to this sort of behavior. That’s racist.
